Girardi on with Patrick saying there were no plans to take Jeter out.

Original script called for Jeter to take final walk around stadium after game
and then find the Torre/ Tino / Mariano / etc at home plate saying join us
in retirement and then all walk off.

Glad it went the way it did.

And Showalter was the guy who once intentionally walked Barry Bonds with the bases loaded, so it's not like he's averse to the strategy.

Still, the next two hitters due up were McCann and Teixeira, so it's possible Buck decided he might as well take his chances against Jeter.

No kidding, huh? I would still be cleaning up vomit this morning if that had happened.

I respect Derek Jeter. I understand the adulation. But this has been choreographed to within a breath of its life at this point, and just one year after a similar deal with Mariano Rivera. Enough already.

That's what made last night so great. Something unscripted happened.

When Hollywood makes the Derek Jeter biopic in 50 years, that's the way it will go down ... like Babe Ruth hugging a grown-up Johnny Sylvester (the kid he once promised to hit a home run for) in the tunnel after hitting his final home run in that horrible John Goodman movie.

I got stuck with the YES telecast last night, just awful. Michael Kay wore out the knee pads last night.

By the end of it I was hoping Jeter would announce he was coming back for one more year then take his Yankees jersey off to reveal a Red Sox (or shit-ass Mets) one underneath. Kay would have Jim Ross-like moment.

Derek Jeter won his last game at this place across 161st Street in
a part of the city they call The Bronx. We all felt young again.

According to ELIAS (via ESPN Sports Info), Jeter is one of two players who played 10-plus years and had a walk-off hit in his final home game.

    The other?

Sterling call - not his best but at least we are saved from Suzy Q chiming in with
her unwelcome observations of her beloved Derek.
In 9th Waldman always goes down to field to be ready for post game interview.

Derek Jeter's wettest dreams don't leave him as good at baseball as those two men were at football.

However, he was the most enduring symbol of the dominant franchise of the last 20 years.

MileHigh called Jeter "quasi above average."

    That's ridiculous.

    I don't know what "quasi-above-average" means.

Jeter was pretty good for a really long time, never nearly as good as would justify the treatment he's gotten this year, but he happened to play for a good team.
