Not at all. The only reason that Williams didn't bat again was because the Orioles threw away a double play ball, allowing two runs to score and the Red Sox to win 5-4.

And also because they sent him out to the field after he batted in the eighth, then sent out a sub to replace him so he could get a standing O.

OK. I didn't even realize that. Not a Scottie Pippen thing at all. I just looked up the box score play by play and skipped right over the defensive substitution.

What I really can't believe is that only 10,000 people showed up for the game.

I get the feeling you haven't read Updike's classic Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu.

Gave us the phrases "idyllic little bandbox" and "God do not answer letters."

I read it a long time ago in the Best American Sports Writing of the Century book.

OK ... just thought it would be new.

Anyway, if anyone hasn't read it, it's obviously a legendary piece -- although if it were this day and age I'm sure it would be mocked on this board and Olbermann would name Updike his Worst Person In The World.

He's really fucking over his teammates, their hard work and everything they've accomplished when he talks like that.

Updike had a good take on Jeter:

If it was a Gannett piece, it would have been five paragraphs and had the score in the first paragraph.

Say bye-bye to Kirk Gibson. AP alert just moved.

Guess Dave Stewart never got over that home run.
