A baseball season is a palimpsest. No sport can make a better case for an added game.

When being the wild card meant you were in a five-game series the same as the division winner, absolutely. Now that the wild card gets forced into a one-game playoff, not so much.

Well, if they feel the same way you do, then nothing's stopping them from *not* burning the good starter and pretending as if they lost the tiebreak when they lose.

It's not Jeter, obviously, but I went to Paul Konerko Night last night in Chicago. Very nice send-off for a Hall of Very Good guy, but a regional icon. Packed house, playoff atmosphere. I'm glad I thought to take my 5-year-old, who cried.

Reds beat Bucs, so NL field is set. Giants-Pirates in play-in, winner plays Nats. Cardinals-Dodgers in other series.

Good to see Paulie get a nice sendoff.

Between him and Frank Thomas, the White Sox have had some damn good first basemen over the past couple decades.

How about Zimmermann. And how about Steven Souza Jr.

What a way to go into the postseason.

Pretty cool perspective on the final catch.

Also helps the Cardinals that they knew the result of the Pirates' game before their own started. That allowed them to rest Wainwright.

Sonny Gray throws a five-hit shutout in Texas to put Oakland in the AL Wild Card game.

Mariners are eliminated even as they lead the Angels, 4-0, in the fifth inning. Felix Hernandez had rebounded from his worst start of the season to throw five one-hit, shutout innings. I wonder if they will yank him now that the game is meaningless.

A's are in, but a meltdown of epic proportions nonetheless.
