Yep, and if he goes from eight losses in postseason series to something like 14 losses in 15 series, it will still be all bad luck.

The Royals led, 3-2, going into the sixth inning, and at that point Kauffman Stadium was a giant scream, and it seemed like the Royals had a chance to win the game their way.

    Fezzik: Which way’s my way?

Vizzini: Pick up one of those rocks, get behind the boulder. In a few minutes the man in black will come running around the bend and the minute his head is in view you HIT IT WITH THE ROCK.

Fezzik: My way is not very sportsmanlike.

You know T-Bakers as Shiloh, IIRC.

As for the Blue Note...I bet I'm not the only one around here who thinks of that place every time I hear Siouxie & The Banshees sing Helter Skelter.

It's fascinating to me how otherwise intelligent adults can be so, so bad at probability. It's something weird in the way our brains are wired that just resists it.

Rick, why don't you run the numbers for us on what the A's success rate should be just based on a roll of the dice.

Bad shit always happens to them and it often seems to be because of their defense. So random.

I covered one of the most notable A's playoff failures, their 2003 loss to the Red Sox, and it was the direct result of fielding lapses and incomprehensible baserunning blunders. That team was full of talented players who on some level didn't know how to play baseball.

Gee, that was the one with two runners thrown out at home (I think in the same inning), right? When Tejada cruised into home thinking he didn't have to run hard because the third baseman brushed against him?

I'm still waiting for that idiot Byrnes to slide.

He refuses to slide until Jeremy does.

That was the joke team that had Jeremy Giambi hitting leadoff.
And they still almost beat the Red Sox.

That's it exactly. And it was all one play. The AL brought the crew chief up to explain the various calls made on that play, and it took him (I forget who, damn it) about 15 minutes. Not only was Tejeda tagged out, but he and the other runner both failed to touch home. The first guy, Byrnes, ran right past it, and would have scored since it was on a wild throw to the catcher.
