The technology is coming. This argument will be obsolete in five years.

 

Noteworthy to this discussion, Felix got a huge break on the final weekend of the season -- on Saturday, four days after he pitched against Toronto, four earned runs were changed to unearned when MLB (Joe Torre) changed an infield hit to an error on Hernandez.

If those four runs stay earned, Hernandez finishes at 2.29, and Kluber (2.44) looks better, with the difference more easily attributed to being in more of a hitter's park.

 

That isn't what is being measured here. The writer is attempting to measure the defensive support these two pitchers had and he is using faulty data to do it. That is not a valid approach.

Even if the current defensive metrics for players and/or teams were valid, it would still be an iffy proposition. He would have to find a way to measure the play of the guys in the field when Hernandez and Kluber pitched. That may not be the same as their level of play over the course of the entire 162 games.

In other words, better to stick to statistics that actually measure what they claim to measure rather than use faulty data.

 

When the technology and the metrics to properly measure defense exist, I won't be arguing the point any more. Right now, that is not the case.

It's not relevant that MLB made a curious scoring change four days after the fact that decided the ERA title (Sale finished at 2.17) and will factor in deciding the Cy Young award?

That is your opinion, and given that you are pushing a conspiracy theory with no facts to back it up, I will give it the lack of consideration it deserves. What reason would Torre have to fix the AL ERA title? It's bad enough when people push PED accusations that they can't support around here. At least those make some sense because the motivation behind the possible act is clear. In this case, what is the gain that would be worth compromising the integrity of the game?
