Which would mean they sit with Mattingly for one more year of what should be another World Series contender? I can't see that. And I can't see them hiring a lame duck either.

What I can see is the Rays taking a huge wad of cash in exchange for a guy who won't be around in 2016 anyway.

So, they dropped the former sportswriter in favor of the 37-year-old "whiz kid" from Tulane, who only got his job with the Rays because he was best friends with Matt Silverman, who was Stuart Sternberg's protege?

    That's hysterical.

And is this not the full story, or is Silverman going to personally run baseball ops for the Rays?

That almost sounds like a demotion, considering he was in charge of everything previously, but it's odd since he never worked in baseball ops.

The core of the team that went to the World Series was not built by Friedman.
There are a lot of smart people who made the Rays what they were.
This is not a death knell for the Rays. It does probably mean that Don Mattingly, who is not smart, is done.

Giants make one small lineup change -- Ishikawa moves up from eighth to seventh, trading spots with Crawford. Ishikawa hits bases-loaded two-out double in first inning.

Bochy knew that was going to happen.

The Cards' best hope now is for Bochy to bring in Strickland in the late innings with the bases loaded against a lefty.

The Giants have scored five runs on hits and four runs on "other" (two on errors, a wild pitch, and a sac fly).

The tying run of the ninth inning Sunday came home from second on a 3-2 wild pitch.

The winning run today scored on an error on a sac bunt.

Great googly moogly. What a way to lose (and win) a game. I hope this thing goes seven.

To quote the great Raider in the Sky "Just Win Baby!"

Seriously, signature wins are nice (Uribe HR in '10; Crawford slam against Pit) but so long as the Giants keep winning, I don't care how. I have a hard time remembering how they won games in '10 & 12 other than pitching and miraculous Zito.
