Metheney's the lastest victim of the "I was saving my stopper for a save situation" school of thought. The game - hell, your whole effing season - is on the line, and you're worried about a save? You've got to get that game into the 10th and you need your ace to do that.

    That said, go Giants!

I have no problem with waiting on using his closer, but to throw Wacha into that situation after not pitching for so long and to stay with him when he got in trouble? Terrible decisions.

Great for you and your kid.

Metheny's an idiot. Ishikawa -- who was ready to retire before the season -- is officially the most famous nobody since Aaron Boone, and will be quickly forgotten. And don't even talk to me about 'walk-offs,' whatever that is, or try to compare this to Bobby Thompson. Neither WS team has a bona fide identifiable star who sells jerseys outside his home city. KC was 26th in home attendance, has no ace or recognized power hitter. Boston, Texas, Yankees are sitting at home, so we get the Royals. Congratulations to MLB and a fitting exit for that used-car retard who couldn't smell trouble if a dog crapped on his shoes. This is baseball, 2014 style!

    I had Dodgers-Royals. Close.

I say Royals, and Alex Gordon has his coming-out party.

I posted this question to someone the other day, when MLB Network was nattering on and on about how Matt Carpenter was going to use this postseason as his launching pad to superstardom:

Is there a single instance in which a player, even a solid player like Gordon, has excelled in a postseason, then gone on the subsequent years to suddenly raise his regular-season performance?

I don't know that Gordon needs to raise his level of performance to become a star. He's already well above average offensively, and one of the handful of best defensive players in the game. He just hasn't had much exposure up to now.

I would just like to note that Madison Bumgarner is finishing up the second year of a five-year, $35.5 million contract. His salary this year is $3.75 million; next year he jumps all the way to $6.75 million. He hits eight figures in 2017.

    I believe that's called "value."

    Clutch doesn't have a pricetag.

Dear Goalmouth: Boston, Texas and the Yankees aren't sitting home because of the playoff format. They're sitting home because they all sucked badly during the regular season.
