Gomez lost his temper, but it was Travis Snyder -- off the bench -- who initiated the physical confrontation. Watch the tape.

Exactly. Things had calmed down before Snider (and Russell Martin as well) came charging out to play tough guy. As Ron Roenicke said, .."any time a pitcher says something to a guy, the guy is going to respond", perhaps this is another "unwritten rule". The Brewers do nothing when the Pirates do their "six shooter" schtick after extra base hits and I would say that the Pirates should shut up as well. Glass Houses and all.

    Gomez threw the first punch.

That's fair. Gomez is uber-sensitive and needs to not react to every perceived slight. I've never understood why some people answer disrespect with respect. By that I mean, why give someone the satisfaction of a reaction? Disrespect their disrespect by just ignoring it.

Having said that, what he originally did should produce nothing but an eye-roll. Christ, based on my Twitter I spied at my in-laws at Easter, I would've thought he committed a capital crime. When I saw the footage ... that's it?

Yeah. I don't have much of an issue with what Gomez did when he hit the ball other than it helps explain why Cole was running his mouth. It wasn't just about giving up a triple.

    And where did it land?

So his violent response is justified by his incompetence as a fighter?

Gomez was simply shouting and flailing, responding to the F-bomb delivered by Cole.

Fact is, it was no more than an animated conversation until Snider and Martin came off the bench and initiated physical contact.

Sorry, but Gomez guy threw the first punch. No way you can blame anybody else for making it physical.

Snider went to far, as did the Brewer who punched him in the face. Didn't really see what Martin did. I'll have to watch it again.

I believe the Brewer in question was catcher Martin Maldonado, the same guy who achieved fame earlier in the weekend by knocking the cover off the ball.

Yup. It was Maldonado. His name had slipped my memory for a moment there.

Snider should stayed on the bench:
