I remember reading about Babby Hartnett signing a ball for Al Capone's son in the New Bill James Historical Abstract. James says Hartnett was signing for Capone's nephew but the other sources say it was Capone's son. Also, Hartnett met Capone at Comiskey Park, not Wrigley Field.

In "Veeck as in Wreck," Veeck says Hack Wilson went over and made nice with Capone before a game and Landis called Wilson into his office. Asked for an explanation, Wilson said something to the effect that since he was always treated well in Capone's joints, he felt he ought to do the same in return.
Landis, taken aback, shelved his Riot Act reading and told Wilson, "just don't do it again."

My favorite line about any baseball player was written by Shirley Povich about Hack Wilson, who was 5-6, 190 pounds and a notorious drunk: "He was built along the lines of a beer keg, and not unfamiliar with its contents."

What do you guys think of the ongoing Rays-Red Sox saga?

Brandon Workman was suspended for six games today by MLB, while David Price -- who seemed to intentionally plunk David Ortiz -- gets nothing.

'37 or '38 since Greenberg was apparently injured and wasn't all All-Star in '36.

    I don't give much of a fuck.

I give a little fuck, but not much of one and certainly not enough of one to take sides.

Instead of asking what we think, why don't you tell us what you think. You have an opinion, share it.

I don't have a dog in the fight, but I think it's stupid Price isn't getting suspended or fined.

If it's something ESPN is going ballistic about - and since it involved their beloved Red Sox, they probably are - then I really don't give a fuck.

    What's the book?

I've never heard that story. I do know that he was traded away from one of the greatest teams of all time, but that's never been a part of the story. (It does sound like the kind of thing a Gallagher would do.)

I only met him a couple of times, but my dad and uncles were close to him when he was younger.

After the Yankees 2000 World Series Parade, I had a chance to speak to Joe DiMaggio. It was just me and him. SO, I say to him, "excuse me sir, but would you happen to remember a ball player named Joe Gallagher who played with you on the '39 Yankees."

He looks at me, almost pissed of, like I'm quizzing him, and says, "why the hell wouldn't I remember him?"

I told him he was my dad's uncle, and he went on to tell me all about what kind of a player he was, like it was yesterday.

After the War, he was teammates with Jackie Robinson in Montreal. Before his call up in '39, he was part of some of the best minor league teams of all time.

    Hack Wilson was 5'6", 190?

I never knew that. I'm not sure I have any picture in my mind of what he looked like, but it would not have been that.
