The Padres DFAed one time legitimate MVP contender Chase Headley in favor of Christian Villanueva who 0 for at least his last 34.

Villanueva has been that bad lately? Didn't he hit three home runs in a game early this season?

Think about two or three weeks ago he was crushing the ball. So decided to pick him up and put him in for a struggling K Seager. So of course this past week Seager raked.

Actually, I don’t think you can—Rule 5.11(a)(1), which permits DH, only refers to pitchers. It states that “A hitter may be designated to bat for the starting pitcher and all subsequent pitchers without otherwise affecting the status of the pitcher(s) in the game.” Moreover, you couldn’t just list the poor hitter as pitcher and Ohtani as fielding position (and then swap positions) because under Rule 5.11(a)(8) “Once a game pitcher is switched from the mound to a position on defense, such move shall terminate the designated hitter role for that club for the remainder of game.”

A team could choose not to DH and let Ohtani hit, of course, but then it would be precluded from using DH for rest of game.

I didn't think he was going to be the Mexican Ohtani. Seager is pretty good, not like I was taking out Arenado. Villanueva is 26 and hasn't played a full season in
    the majors.

But he started off really hot, and now we think that may not have been indicative of his long-term performance? Is that accurate?

Villanueva was ready for the start of the season. Just not the middle.

    What is inaccurate about it?

Wasn't really hot, if you take away the 3 homer game it was a good start not a great start.
Didn't expect him to be great, just Seager was my only 3b and he was pretty bad. His avg
dropped pretty much last season also.
