Archer & Kela! I'd rather have them (plus Dickerson) than McCutchen & Cole.

Give the Pirates credit. They actually added payroll at the deadline.

They just traded Austin Meadows and Tyler Glasnow for Chris Archer.

Guy, your fails to take into account the price in talent they gave up in Meadows and Glasnow. Meadows was an elite prospect who showed some good things in the majors this year. Glasnow is a former elite prospect who is still taking some time to get his act together.

Archer is not as good as Cole and Meadows is better than any of the players the Pirates got in exchange for Cole or McCutchen.

As I have been saying all along, the Pirates have an excellent front office. The Dickerson deal was outstanding. This one makes some sense, too. It is ownership that keeps fucking things up, but in this rare instance, the owner actually got out of the way and let the GM do his job.

With Archer gone I'm wondering who will take his role on the Rays and pick silly fights with prospects to look like a clubhouse leader.

That's a pretty good return for Archer. Fascinating deal.

Before Archer and Eovaldi were dealt they were doing three starters and two bullpen days with Sergio Romo or Ryne Stanek "starting" and using a middle guy for 3-4 innings.

My guess is they will move Glasnow back into a rotation and I think they are going to activate Jake Faria from the DL soon. So they will probably stick with that.

YankeeFan works for the Nats? Why hasn't he changed his name to NationalsFan?

I don't know any of the guys they got back, but why would they trade Schoop?

It is too much. I wonder if perhaps the Pirates were overcompensating for what they did in the offseason, which had at least part of the fanbase revolting.

My gut reaction was more favorable than what I'm thinking now that I've taken a look at Archer. I didn't realize just how mediocre his numbers are this season.

There were some other interesting moves.

The Dodgers got Dozier from the Twins for Forsythe and prospects, which is a nice upgrade. If Dozier hits one of his big hot streaks at the right time, he could make a big impact.

The Braves got Gausman, giving them another veteran to mix in with all those young arms.
