It accords events - walks, singles, doubles, triple, home runs - “weight” according to how much they actually contribute to run-scoring probability. A double is not actually twice as valuable as a single, for example. So none of the three traditional percentages capture event value with precision.

A 3-RBI triple is still just as sweet as a weighted triple.

You are a GM and must spend your remaining salary on a guy with a wOBA of .350 and 70 RBIs or a guy with a wOBA of .300 with 110 RBIs. They both had 650 plate appearances.

    Which do you sign?

The one that can also pitch.

Regardless of an answer you'd probably come back with this chart ...

But if I'm down to 2 guys, I'm not using wOBA as a determining factor necessarily.

In the end, is an RBI-triple better than a 2-RBI single because triple?

Give me a choice to 2 current players and I'd decide on who I'd spend on on several factors besides just wOBA.

    So would anyone.

What does that have to do with the price of tea in China?

Because you're asking me to choose between Jiggs Calhoun and Marfa Gregory based on one stat.

    What was your point again?

You’re down to two guys but your stats are garbled. You don’t know their wOBA and you don’t know their RBI. You can get only one of those pieces of information ... which one do you get?

    No. Two stats.

Trick question, Professor: It's 2018 so there's no reason for stats to be garbled.

What are the players like on defense?

Is one of them a DH only?
