Random thought following the Field of Dreams game - why hasn't Cooperstown honored Kevin Costner with a plaque? Not saying he goes in like a player or contributor - but shoot "Abbot and Costello" are in for "Who's On First" - you telling me Bull Durham, Field of Dreams and For The Love of the Game and the numerous times MLB trotted him out to add some gravitas for an event aren't deserving? Shoot, at least the Frick.

 

This is a great idea.

 

If the HOF hasn't already done it, they should add a small auditorium type room with seating for maybe a hundred people, and show baseball movies and videos on a continuous loop.

 

It is a great idea ... and I'm pretty sure MLB takes itself too seriously to do it. They're afraid the George Wills of the world will turn green.

 

Judging by recent winners of the Frick - we seem to be in a "lull" of living and longtime pxp announcer types.

 

There used to be a sports museum in Newport Beach that did this. The owner was John Anderson (commercial real estate or something like that), who I met when he and his friend Brian Kennedy took a few Kings road trips. We had drinks and shared cabs a few times. He was good friends with Marcel Dionne, thus, he knew most of the players.

At the museum, he had a downstairs area where there were seats and benches from dozens of different stadiums and arenas. They played movies on a loop. Everything was free. Anderson wanted to do things for kids. If you could get a group of kids to the museum, he guaranteed there would be a sports celebrity there to talk to them (Ronnie Lott was a frequent host), plus snacks and drinks. He had a ton of memorabilia, much of it hockey and college football related. Unfortunately, he closed the museum when thefts started to mount, pissed him off. He died a few years ago. Great guy.

 

If Costner gets in so does Tanner Fucking Boyle.

Tatum's half-brother Patrick is the Angels TV play-by-play announcer and he's horrible. Cliche ridden, total fan boy and no feel for the game. The mound and home plate are bump and dish and every hit a knock. An Ohtani third-inning single is called with the enthusiasm of Gibson's home run. He treats partner Mark Gubicza like he was Nolan Ryan and not just a good former MLB pitcher. Between the team's play and his nonsense, the games are unwatchable.

The U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in (correction: Eveleth) has the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" game on constant replay. It's fun to watch everybody in the museum gather closer to the screen about the time Eruzione hits the game-winning goal.

"Do you believe in miracles?" Yep, every two hours. It never gets old.

 

Some teams stopped doing it, but not all of them. The Pirates sent Roansy Contreras down for over a month to "monitor his innings." This was right after one of his best starts. The kid has been erratic, but he's better than most of the crap they have had out there pitching for them this season.

The way the Mets spent in the offseason, I don't think they are going to let factors like that get in the way. Baty had always hit the ball extremely hard and he had good plate discipline, but he had always hit too many ground balls. This year, he had 19 home runs in the minors, matching his total from 2019 and 2021 combined.

That said, I don't think it was a matter of Baty forcing his way up to the majors. He only played six games at AAA before getting the call. I think he got the call because the Mets just lost two infielders to the IL, Escobar and Guillorme. Escobar has an oblique strain, which could have him out for a while. Guillorme could be out three or four weeks with a groin strain. Baty isn't just up to play part time. He is probably going to be at third base every day, especially if he hits.
