I am reading '"July 2, 1903," about the mysterious death of dead-ball era superstar Ed Delahanty. It's a great history of turn-of-the-century (1900) baseball.

The author is Mike Sowell, the same guy who wrote "The Pitch That Killed," one of the best baseball books I've ever read. I know there are lots of old-time baseball geeks here, just wanted to alert them.

In case anybody forgot he's a star. LOL

I have both of them. Great reads.

In both of them, reading about how screwed up MLB’s structure was back then, it’s a miracle that we still have the sport today.

The part in “The Pitch That Killed” about the owners and Ban Johnson squabbling about Mays to the point of nearly killing the AL is a doozy. Even Mays was stunned.

The more I read, the more amazed I am that the AL survived Ban Johnson. What an autocratic asshole. At least Harridge and Cronin, incompetent as they were, stayed out of the way but they still managed to screw up the 1961 and 1969 expansions.

Gotta love a player being willing to call out his organization for being shitty.
