With 11 hits. Left 9 on. Went 1-for-16 with runners in scoring position. First runs given up by Fulmer all season.

    But it could be worse.

In my elementary school (I think it was fourth grade), my teacher had a collection of biographical books on Mays, Aaron and Bart Starr. One thing I remember about the Mays one was that Willie didn’t think he was ready for the majors.

Durocher asked him what he was hitting, and Mays replied “.477.” Durocher then asked if he thought he could hit .250 for him. Mays said he guessed so, and Durocher told him, in kids’ book language, to get his ass to New York.

Mays went 1-for-24 to start his career, the lone hit being a homer off Warren Spahn. He wound up hitting 20 homers and .274 and was in the on-deck circle when Thomson homered off Branca in the playoffs. He also hit the fly ball in the World Series that caused Mantle to step on that drainage grate.

Tigers know of one-year wonders. Akil Badoo demoted to the minors.

Trailing by 6 runs going into the 9th in 8 percent of your games is suboptimal.

The Tigers optioned Akil Baddoo to Toledo. He was a real breath of fresh air early last season.

Baseball umpires are universally convinced that the crowd comes to see them.
