There will be no Games 163. Any ties will be broken by the extensive tiebreaker formulas which start with head to head record among tied teams.

The Tigers lose tiebreakers against both the Royals and Twins, so they have to finish at least one game ahead.

I thought Game 163 was played only in an elimination scenario. Otherwise, if both teams are in, the tiebreakers kick in.

 

They did away with it all together. They didn’t want to mess with the wild card rounds not that they’re best of 3.

Somehow "The Tigers win the tiebreaker! The Tigers win the tiebreaker!" doesn't have quite the same impact.

 

Interesting thing the way the Tigers' pitching is set up. Skubal goes on Tuesday and presumably on Sunday if necessary. But if they've already secured playoff participation -- but not necessarily home field -- entering Sunday, should they skip him and hold him for the playoff opener?

 

You almost have to because they would be in the best of three series and if he goes Sunday, he might be also be unavailable for Game 2, and there may not be a Game 3

 

I know no one will feel bad for the Braves, but they have a shot at winning 90 games and not making the playoffs

 

They’d be comfortably in the AL field at 90. And that’s also rare. One of the few years in which the NL is better than the AL. Perhaps the universalization of the DH, which roiled “purists,” is evening the playing field.
