Gonzalez has been unbelievable, but AS OF TODAY, I'd pick Granderson. With Jeter's relatively poor first half and A-Rod's injury, the Yanks might have fallen off to Tampa Bay level if Granderson had only performed as well as he did last year.

Best player in the NL this season, but the Dodgers suck and that will probably cost him the award.

Remember when I was blasted for saying Gonzo was having a better year than Bautista a month ago? Well, he was then, and he definitely is now. Hate to say I told you so.....

But here's a pretty good piece on the AL Cy Young situation. After seeing this last night, I drew the conclusion that Verlander would be my guy now / will be at the end of the year. But it's yet another solid Passan piece....

You were not right when you made the argument at the all-star break. However, since the all-star break, Bautista has hit .200 with 2 home runs and 11 RBI. This probably has something to do with him falling out of the discussion.

No you weren't right a month ago and you made a fool of yourself then. The logic you used was idiotic at the time and still is now.

fol on my senility guessing 'ellsworth'/elsbury'... i'm ellsworth was a guy i covered in my nfl days. i'll look it up....

INDEED, percy ellsworth was a decent safety for the giants in the late '90s. geez, so much useless info crammed into me brain....

    ELSBURY.

reminds me of the year the rams draft leonard little. in my draft report card i referred to him as 'little leonard.' oy.

Exactly. What has transpired since does not change the fact that you were dead wrong a month ago.

You want to start the campaign? There have definitely been worse MVPs.

Dave Parker was better on the '79 Pirates. I guess the only reason he didn't get MVP in 1979 was because he wasn't quite as good as when he won it in '78.

Or maybe some voters just liked Stargell better. Aside from the stuff everybody knows, I've heard some stories about Parker from those days. None of them positive.

I think there is some argument to be made who was better that year. Jeter isn't even the second-best player on his own team. Granderson is the best. Even with the average being down again, Teixeira is significantly better. Hell, he's the one keeping Jeter's error total down with his superb defense at first base.

I don't think Parker's rep had anything to do with him not winning in 1979. He won it in 1978. I thought most people liked him until the early 80s when the cocaine got out of control, and his weight ballooned.

You won't hear an argument from me that Jeter's been the best player (statistically) on the Yankees. He's probably 3rd or 4th. I think the injuries have affected him this year, it happens, every great player has a year like that in their career. He might also be saving his energy for the postseason. I would look out for him next year though.
