MLB beat writers, spouses

    Getaway day can be used an off day. Thanksgiving to the second week week, while that is a busy time, taking a break prior to the winter meetings is a good idea to prevent burnout. Backup guys should be able to handle the work.
    Hey, it's not an exact science but the bottom line is to get a break. You have to squeeze the time in somewhere.

    I covered baseball when I was 23-24 and I cannot imagine being gone that much with a wife and kids.

    Covering the NFL wasn't too bad. There are 10-12 weekend trips and 3-4 longer trips with the Super Bowl, combine, owners' meetings and maybe the Senior Bowl. It's a lot, but nothing compared to spring training and 81 road games.

    I always loved the road. Just took it as part of the job.
