I have no inside knowledge on this, but I believe that Meche and his agent looked for both a place where the money would be good and the pressure to win would be minimal. If he pitches well long enough, it's just possible he'll build his confidence to the point where he can do well under pressure also. But I doubt it.

He's from Ron Guidry's home town. If he had wound up with the Yankees, he would have driven Guidry over the edge.

There's one thing I have learned over the years, much to my dismay. I can never officially count out the Yankees. I agree that they don't look good enough to make it into the playoffs but I won't believe it until I know for sure. I've been burned too many times.

That's a heck of an unflattering accusation to make with "no inside knowledge."

I have to agree with your characterization; you're darned right it's unflattering.

I hope he thrives, by the way. Meche is a likeable young man who, for the past six years, has been driving Seattle managers, coaches and fans nuts. A power arm, but a constant nibbler whose lowest WHIP was over 1.34.

    Gotta love those Phils phans:

Yost comes out and gets run during a nice dustup with the home-plate ump. Crowd gives him an ovation as he leaves.

Zambrano has three shutout innings, but he doesn't look right to me.

Though he is still hitting 92... and he escaped that first inning.

EDIT: Touching 96, Z mows the meat of the Mets order in the fourth.

Tim Hudson appears to be pitching a pretty good game.

He's auditioning for the Shea faithful. Nothing more. I guess he'll give a shit for his potential suitors.

Randy Johnson is looking very good early.

That has been the story most of the season. His velocity just isn't there the first inning or two.
