Sugar Ray Robinson's son Ronnie was a skater during that era.

Just saw this morning that Brock Deatherage has "voluntarily retired." He definitely won't be the only one for the Tigers, or across the entire minor leagues.

With a loss of one year's salary and development, plus the elimination of at least one minor league level for each of the 30 teams, there will be a serious squeeze on fringe MILB players this spring. That's always the case as guys realize they aren't going to make it out of rookie ball or get to AA, but the lack of options for guys in crowded systems in 2021 will be worse than normal.

"Independent" leagues are great, but the pay and chance to showcase yourself will be worse than being "organizational fodder." And switching the Appy to a collegiate wood bat league cuts another 200 or so paid jobs. The turnover of prospects is only going to get more intense. Unless you're a bonus baby or at a position of need, you probably won't even get an extended look now. Don't get hurt or have an extended slump.

I guess the good news is "cup of coffee" guys can go get real jobs instead of getting paid $,6000 a year to play ball in Peoria.

On the bright side, with a name like Brock Deatherage he's already taken the first step toward a second career as an internationally renowned assassin and super spy.

Yeah, seeing as the minor leagues are just about the only hope to be found in the Tigers system at the present time, that name definitely stood out for some inside jokes. Sad that he's apparently reached the end of the line, though I suppose that is the way of things.
