To make BYH's tremendous deal, they would HAVE to toss Hermida and possibly someone else....

The Yankees, making the same trade, would be able to keep Ramirez.

We getting this... at all... yet?

You have to have fans that actually show up to make money.

Still, I like the idea. They are in contention so they are taking a chance at winning now. They have a lot of all-or-nothing hitters in that lineup, so a more consistent producer like Ramirez could help quite a bit.

Besides, look at that team. It's not like they ever seem to consider defense anyway.

The Pirates always seem too scared to commit or maybe they've never fully grasped the cycle of competitiveness that small- and mid-market teams go through. At some point they need to get to the point where they say, "We have a solid nucleus now let's go find the complementary pieces and sign a big-time front-of-the-rotation pitcher."

A big part of the problem, of course, is that they haven't drafted particularly well given some very good opportunities and arguably have never had the beginning of a solid nucleus. That's probably the biggest difference between them and the Brewers, as an example.

    I know.

It just seems like they finally have the hitting nucleus.

Lord knows they cannot develop a decent pitcher.

Not really. Revenue sharing will more than cover their meager payroll. Jeffrey Loria and David Samson will laugh all the way to the bank.

Isn't it possible that both the Pirates and the system are broken?

And really, you think the Pirates have the cash to add Lohse and Lowe? Were you paying attention to the money that was given to similar pitchers like Gil Meche and Ted Lilly in recent seasons?

Throwing money at Lohse would be a horrible mistake. He is the new Jeff Suppan. He is having that one good season with the help of Dave Duncan. Somebody will overpay him and then he will turn back into the crappy pitcher he always has been.

It just goes against everything they have ever done. Why get rid of Cabrera for prospects if you are going to sign Manny Ramirez and his huge contract.

Oh, I thought you were suggesting that bringing in Manny would help them bring up attendance to help offset paying him.

Lohse might be a bad choice, but you understand what I mean.

Two good arms would really push them over the top (or above .500).

If the starting pitching improves next season, then the offense -- which may soon lose another piece in Jason Bay -- will fall apart.

That's the way it works in Pirate Land.

Let's end this fallacy now: The Marlins will not pay Manny a dime, regardless of whether the deal goes through. Red Sox will pick up the check.

Good point. I had read that in one of the reports. My point is, I doubt adding Manny will make a significant positive financial impact.
