I'll rule that a home run.

Yeah, but who else is out there? Sabathia is going to get a monster contract -- and the Braves aren't in that game anymore (not that they ever were.)

Guarantee you they don't sign Sabathia. Who else is available?

Carl Pavano. Mike Mussina. Andy Pettitte.

    Those are your only choices.

Maybe Smoltz? Does anything think he'll pitch again.
CC and Sheets are two big 'uns available. The Brewers better win it this year.

Sheets, Garland, Pettitte, Dempster, Burnett, Looper, Lohse, Loiza, D. Lowe, Wolf, Od. Perez, Ol. Perez, Pedro ... and some others.

EDIT: Burnett and some others would have to opt out.

Ugh. I'm not excited about any of them.

The Brewers may not be that bad even if they lose both. They still have a very good lineup and they can replace one of them with Yovani Gallardo, who should be back from the knee injury that ruined his '08 season.

They also have a tremendous minor-league system, even with Matt LaPorta gone. With Eric Gagne's contract coming off the books, they should be able to spend either on keeping Sabathia or Sheets or perhaps getting some bullpen help.

Frenchy, and I could be wrong on this, is a year away from arbitration and will likely get the automatic renewal thing he got this year. The way he's played, he better be damn glad if he gets it, too. As well as those already mentioned, the Braves might well bid adieu to Glavine's contract. They'll have some money to spend, particularly if they maintain their current payroll level. I doubt they'll sign more than one starting pitcher, with or without Hudson.

Gregg Zaun says he wants out of Toronto after losing his starting job to Rod Barajas. Good riddance. Take your blank-check-writing, weak-armed, steroid-using ass out of town....

Agree there. The Brewers, overseen correctly, can compete for a division title the next 8-10 years with the kind of young talent they have on the field and in the pipeline. The turnaround of the franchise has been remarkable to me.

Fox Sports story on the 10 worst deadline trades. I wonder if they didn't consider salary dumps or they just forgot Aramis Ramirez and Kenny Lofton to the Cubs for Jose Hernandez, a broken Bobby Hill and a bag of shit.

The Braves don't have many pitchers in the upper minors who are ready to help them by next year (unless you count Marek), so they'll probably have to sign somebody. They won't break the bank for C.C. or Sheets, but someone like Burnett might be worth a look.

I figure Hudson is out for 2009, and because of this, Smoltz gives it another try. Glavine's probably done, though.

And no, Atlanta doesn't usually draw more than 25K at home, unless they're playing the Mets or Phillies or one of the teams who always draw on the road, like the Cubs or Red Sox.
