Having been on both sides of the coin, I can see both sides. I have always, no matter what the relationship is with my superior, been of the mindset to give them notification of when I am going to interview somewhere. I mean, really ... What are you going to do, call in sick and lie? Moddy has a great point: I have been the boss of a great many people who didn't share squat about their personal lives, and I wasn't owed anything in that regard from them. What they DID owe was a return on the investment we make via their paycheck. Did I think less of Person A when they didn't clue me in on their departure when it was still impending? Not particularly. But I *did* think more of Person B as a pro when they said "Yo, boss, head's up, I am talking to The Podunk Press. Didn't want you finding out through the grapevine."

I'd be worried I'd hurt the guy at his current gig. Is it really worth it to post something on a message board?

I was under the impression we worked under a "first do no harm" policy here at sj when it comes to people's jobs, which often IS their livelihood.

My only experience is in the broadcast industry where you NEVER tell a friggin' soul where you are interviewing. It could impact contract negotiations and fuck you but good.

What is it about this job that is freaking people out? I'm being sincere because I've posted the names of candidates for jobs probably a hundred times and others have posted names of candidates hundreds of times and I can count on one hand how many times there's been any significant reaction. Most of those times were because the person being brought in was ripped, either by me, or someone else.

That's not the case here. The writer has not been ripped in any way. My guess is the writer in question is a regular here and people are jumping to his defense, or he didn't tell his boss he was interviewing for this gig.

Enlighten me please, either here or by PM.

In job searches I've been involved in, I've always been very curious about what would be said about the opening on here. I wonder about what the peanut gallery thinks and sort of guess at it, then see what's actually been said with some anticipation.

I bet folks in Mobile had no clue the job posting on here would evolve into this...

But hey, it's actually a good discussion. I actually wish it was its own thread. These things are always a bit awkward and I'm always very curious on how others handle it.

As Moddy noted, there's an extremely good chance Kaplan already knew anyway.

Trust me, the people in Mobile are very aware of this board and these job threads. One of the most controversial job threads in the history of this board had to do with an opening in Mobile.

Just FYI, a number of years ago I interviewed for a job that was being discussed on this board. I was actually kind of hoping I would get mentioned here -- just to see what people would say about me -- but I never did. As I recall, some poster named another candidate who had interviewed and made a vague reference to someone else being in the running (that was me), but that's as close as I came.

I have no dog in the hunt. No idea about the situation. So, I'm not rallying to the defense of a friend. I think it's a bad precedent. And yes, I think it's a precedent, but I could be wrong. I don't read every thread.

I certainly don't remember seeing posts that say "so-and-so" is interviewing for this job or that job, especially not "hundreds of times." Of course, if I had a dollar for every time Mizzougrad exaggerated wildly one way or another, I'd never need to interview again.

I've read this thread for a few days and I find myself agreeing with Johnny D and Moddy. You just DON'T out someone on this board, no matter what. No excuse for that action. What if that did hurt his standing in Knoxville?

Well, I can think of four times when I interviewed for jobs where it was all over this site. It goes with the territory, and thankfully, people were kind...

I would bet that the vast majority of major college and pro jobs at medium or larger papers have names listed.

And I don't believe for a second that you have no dog in this fight.

uh, ah, I love J_D, he's one of my main men in life. But we're on opposite sides of this argument! Not that I don't love you, too.

I don't think Mizzou intentionally meant to out anyone. There are good points made by both sides of the argument about whether or not to inform superiors that you are looking for employment elsewhere.
The problem some people have on this subject is separating business issues from personal issues. I realize nowadays, its not what you know but who you know and a lot of ass kissing when it comes to getting a gig. But when its all said and done, I think it comes down to personal preference on whether to inform superiors of your intentions. There is no protocol to follow.
And I don't have a dog in the fight either.
