    Kindest FoF,

Where do you stand on "No trouble"? Or it's cousins, "You bet," and "Any time"?

Acceptable as variation or Midwestern passive-aggressiveness run amok?

    Your humble gutter snipe, etc.

    Dear Friend,
I wish that story never had to be written, since it was a result of such awful circumstances. But it reminds of the kindness and good will I received on a daily basis as a resident of Gander. The old gals I worked with would always being me leftovers and bags of groceries, because they knew what was written on my paycheque every two weeks.
    Cheers,

    Mr 12

No trouble, no problem and you bet = the square root of You're welcome

    The very definition of courtesy.

    Dr.

I think if you'll look at the posts you'll see that I'm far less confrontational and much more polite than the posters on the other side. Not that this is a particuliarly Canadian trait -- I think the U.S. posters miss a crucial point, that being as a Torontonian I'm not American nor fully Canadian. Canadians get that. It's sort of humbling when I go out into the regions -- I say I'm from Toronto and apologize. Absolutely true. If I could only be the delegate from San Marino--can't quite pull it off with Canadians. Anyway, to the point of being confrontational, I wonder why you ask me and not Mr Bostock -- because he's on your side? In stark contrast to Mr Bostock I don't go ad hominem. Whereas he suggests that I'm a liar, I just point out points of public policy that fly in the face of "niceness." No matter and certainly no personal judgment against Mr Bostock. I'm sure he's a pillar in his community, a model for American youth. Thank you so much for you interest nonetheless and for maintaining a civil line of inquiry that elevates at least one side of this debate.

    Thank you again.

No, I expect confrontation and snark from Lyman. It was a bit disconcerting coming from you, especially since I don't believe we've ever had words. Hope that explains things.

    Dr.

I'm missing something. Did we just have words? I don't think I insulted you (or for that matter, anybody else).

No, I don't think we just had words. But you did insult me, in a manner of speaking, when you said you were being confrontational because you were applying for U.S. citizenship. I didn't take it personally because, Lord knows, I've heard a lot worse from a lot of people, but as I just said, it was a bit odd to hear it from you.

    Dr,

Please, no offence intended. Just making sport of the fact that you might have been suggesting that I was doing something out of character -- I ran with the ball, joking about doing something totally out of character. I mean everyone knows all I want is my Irish passport and then piss on you all.

    Leper Lover --

I was raised to say you're welcome, but will throw in a you bet or no problem in a non-formal setting. One can't live in the upper midwest and avoid them.

'Tis like having a little lunch or the lutefisk dinner being a heckuva deal, doncha know?

    But I always say please...

    Corn and Beans,

    Zeke

  10. Upper Midwesterners are fantastic people. I enjoyed my time there immensely.

But I'm sure as far as politeness is concerned, they can't hold a candle to anybody in Flin Flon or Bella Bella.

Yeah, but try finding good lefse up there.

  12. Can you find good lefse anywhere?
