Forgive my skepticism, but at 90 eff days -- and counting -- combined with zero raises in more than six years, I've lost all hope in the people running this company.

  2. Me too, and I wont be ready to start trusting them until several other things happen. But, if furloughs are indeed soon to be gone, there could be a slight chance for a small amount of sunlught at the end of an extremely long tunnel, and for that, im going to attempt to be positive.

Well, WHEN and IF eff days are done away with, I will listen. Until then, with this company, it's all noise and it can STFU.

I was shown a memo from Barrett that said they "may" be "considering" reducing the number of days off without pay in mid-2014 "if" things improve.

Sorry, her track record of telling the truth offers no validity to anything the woman says.

Nothing good ever comes out of this company -- at least at the top. At the bottom, some chewed up journalists who were hard-working dedicated people who just endured too many teeth marks.

The problem may be that it's human nature that once you see you can get by with something, it's hard to go back.

If a company sees it can survive with furloughs, or fewer staffers, or lower salaries or whatever and that the "plan" is working (however that is defined), what incentive is there to go back to the way things used to be?

I think the entire economy is a reflection of that. Recession hit in 2007 or whenever and companies cut a lot of jobs in lots of industries. They managed to survive and, as the economy slowly improved, started to reduce losses or even turn a profit. Maybe they hire back a few people, but probably not to the pre-2007 levels of staffing. Why should they, if they've shown they can survive and profit with fewer?

I heard you Bamaboys were told recently that everyone would have to get smart phones and learn how to use some software to upload videos at any time. I just know they are paying for the smart phones, right?

We have not heard a peep of this, yet...

"I'd love to buy a smartphone to do work for you, but I can't afford it because you keep putting me on furlough."

    That'll go over really well.

One CNHI shop where I worked briefly (thank God it was briefly) dumped all of its photographers and had all the reporters (and an occasional freelancer) taking photos. Not sure what, if any, training in photography these poor souls were given. The results were very mixed.

As a layout editor, I'd cringe at some of the stuff I saw and wonder how I was ever going to make a halfway decent front page out of it. I resisted the urge to whine at the reporters, because I knew they were in the same boat I was in, all taking orders from Captain Crazy and that protesting to either was like lighting a fire in a trash can.

But I often wondered aloud late at night --- with just three of us in the building --- how any editor could be so effin' stupid to can all the photographers. (yes, this was a 7-day daily in a decent-sized city with no competition).

Maybe Capt. Crazy's lone objective was to do something, anything, to show his publisher that he was cutting costs...with the sole purpose of making himself look good. Know what I mean?
