The Denver Post just had two rounds of buyouts since June, and a few layoffs, so it is feeling the pressure.

Two rounds of buyouts and a few layoffs since June?
Or, two rounds since June. And, before that, some layoffs?

I'm pretty sure the story said a $1 million loss on the quarter down from a $13 million PROFIT from the same quarter a year ago. I'd like to see the books. Either the company is either in a drastic nosedive or there is looting going on.

    Nevermind. I'm not touching it.

Sorry, it actually, might have been since March or April. They had buyouts, didn't get enough people to do it, then had another round and as part of that, there were a few layoffs, including a columnist. I'll have to go dig it up.

    Updated:
16 people took buyouts in June and there were seven layoffs.
There was a round of buyouts in spring 2006 in which the goal was 25 buyouts, but only 13 took it, but there were no layoffs then.

Interestingly, they just hired a new Nuggets writer (Benjamin Hochman).

I'm curious to the timing. Because -- and I've had experience -- this ignominious man usually waits right before the beginning of the 4th quarter to announce employee separation.

Word is, MediaNews' credit rating will be downgraded next year. That will be only way this "man" changes. (Or accelerates).

Brace yourself, Chicago. Talk is Lean Dean might be purchasing the Chicago Sun Times.

I would think that Singleton would have learned his lesson about trying to compete in a real competitive market, as he tried in Dallas. Also, I doubt he could get the financing.

Well, he's got more issues in Northern Cali. After Carole Leigh Hutton's departure, now the guy running the papers up there and who hired Hutton at the Mercury News is leaving.

He can consider himself lucky he's leaving on his own. Anyone who was dumb enough to hire Hutton should have his feet held to the fire.

Who really believes he left on his own?

You figure he had to be making at least $200,000 a year, probably more. (Singleton has not cut execs' salaries, I am told.)
