Ever since Watergate, the Republicans (business, Wall Street, etc.) have been trying to kill journalism.

I made my previous James Taylor (yes, THAT James Taylor) reference, for a reason.

Not that I'm a big Kucinich fan, but the effort NBC used to keep Dennis out of their debate Tuesday after initially inviting him (getting a ruling from the Nevada Supreme Court) truly troubles me.

I recall Randy Harvey, current SE of the LA Times and somebody I thought of as a good guy, say he worked with Singleton early in his career and that Singleton was a pretty good editor. I have a hard time believing it, but who knows.

It is hard to think of a person who has done more damage to newspapers than Billy Dean Singleton. He has cutback staffs and in some cases pretty much killed newspapers in the New Jersey suburbs of New York, the Los Angeles area, and in Dallas to think of some instances. Add the San Jose Mercury News.

I say damage because there are other famous publishers who, while they may have been SOBs, managed to build media empires which included newspapers, magazines, and broadcast outlets. Murdoch, Newhouse, Neuworth weren't exactly warm and fuzzy people, but they did create something and grow things. Singleton just takes something, squeezes whatever can be squeezed, and you are left with a shell of a paper if the paper is left at all.

    Editor? Edit what?
You're giving the man too much credit.

Lean is in talks to share content with the Orange County Register and folks in Santa Ana think it could lead to him getting the paper.

    Great lead:

When somebody writes the history of the decline and death of The Orange County Register, the final chapter just might begin with a series of secret meetings the paper held with Dean Singleton's MediaNews Inc. in recent weeks.

Tell the folks at the Register to pull out of the parking lot and drive off as fast as they can and do not look back.

The OCR, while it has dealt with its share of staff reductions and space cuts in the last few years, is still a great paper to read on most days. Under Dean's leadership, I'm afraid for that place.
