Think Simon is getting sued, too. First, the complainer-jackass has to win the suit. Second, it draws more attention to the claim that complainer-jackass is indeed a jackass. Third, sued or not, it still might be worth it.

    Life be short.

Actually yes, we have, Joe. The editor of The (Spokane, Wash.) Spokesman-Review fought his bosses tooth-and-nail on making staff cuts but ultimately relented.

(Editor Stephen A.) Smith said he has not yet decided where to make cuts but acknowledged it will be noticeable.

"I won't subscribe to the hogwash that we can do more with less," he said.

I think I had seen something about that. Not to quibble, but he's saying it pre-cuts, while he's still putting out the current product. I want to see him say it six months after his ax (reluctant or not) falls. I want to see him or someone else admit honestly, after the fact, that "we aren't as good as we used to be, but please, folks, continue to buy our newspaper."

That truth doesn't get told, and every place that undergoes cuts has some jackass in a suit puffing up his chest to claim the paper is doing journalism as well as before or maybe even better!

Things are not looking good at the Daily News. From what I hear, none of Singleton's suits have even talked to our editor in a couple weeks and it's driving him crazy. We are all anticipating cuts to come even after everything they've asked to do we've done. Taking time off to reduce vacation days, cutting back on travel, expenses, one round of cuts, earlier deadlines, smaller sections, universal desks, consolidation. It all doesn't matter. They can't make enough money. It makes me sick.

Apparently Register staffers are sharing bylines in NorCal with Singleton's papers that say MediaNews Staff. Word is that lots of pro beats will be swallowed in SoCal.

Probably only a matter of time before NoCal teams travelling south will be covered by SoCal writers and vice versa to save travel costs.

Buyout offers are reportedly coming out Friday for the Daily News. Heads will roll.

No buyouts. Straight layoffs. As many as 30. In the newsroom.
