from Gannett blog: It is horrific right now at the Des Moines Register in the newsroom. People being escorted out of the building. Reporters, photographer, two editors, others.

(there has to be a better way to do it than this ...............)

Gannett has stopped eating its young. It's not eating anything it can get its hands on.

Every time someone accuses the media of having a liberal bias, stuff like this comes up to remind me exactly why they should.

If these people are so driven by profit, can't they just start selling papers to someone who isn't an asshole?

Have been told of two reporters cut in Louisville. One a features writer/editor and another in Neighborhoods.

Ex-Star reporter Ruth Holladay's blog said C-J Indiana statehouse reporter Lesley Stedman Weidenbener is out, which likely means no more presence at the Indiana statehouse for the C-J. Damn shame, and not just because I remember Lesley from when we were both at the High School Journalism Institute at IU ages ago.

Holladay's blog has a longer list of some of the Indy Star names, but the blog is overwhelmed with traffic and not loading. I don't recall seeing any sports names on there, but that doesn't mean no one from sports is affected.

What I genuinely don't understand is the following phrase:

Really? WHO is optimistic about an economic recovery in the newspaper industry? Or, really, the economy in general? It's not happening anytime soon. Stop pretending it will.

I'm not sure what it's going to take to get Corporate America to stop playing us for fools, but it's time to start figuring it out.

Heard sports at the Star definitely got hit. At least three (no names).

Holladay's blog is the go-to for info every time there's a Gannett purge in Indy.

I always hold my breath hoping my friends aren't on the list. Unfotunately, at least one usually is.

I'm told Star lost 81 positions (not necessarily people).

If this is true, I'm not surprised. And I'm sure on Sunday, the publisher will write a column saying how great the newspaper still is even after the layoffs. She's done it every time they've had layoffs, and then she just gets drilled in the online comments.

From the comments section after one the Gannett Layoffs...

"I hope the next Gannett cut is Craig DuBow's throat."
