Those 15 furlough days should make things interesting at the combined editing centers and Tampa sports desk. Yikes.

If you're on furlough, you can get unemployment. A lot of places try to convince employees to take one day a week off for a certain number of weeks. You'll qualify for less unemployment if that's the case.

At a minimum, take them a week (five days) at a time.

Furloughs are always a better option than layoffs or a straight pay cut, but 15 days in six months is a lot.

Company will save $9 million. How many corporate executives have to die to save $9 million in salaries?

The company will save $9 million and the section will still be put out every day.

Some of MG's papers have such a bare bone staff already that if two or three people took five days of furlough at the same time they'd never get the paper out.

Most of the people in our newsroom today are wearing that sarcastic sort of smile that says, 'I'd like to shoot this place up with an AK-47 right now'. Morale is not very good.

Then that's exactly what people should do.

When was the last time morale was good in a newsroom? 2005?

All those furlough days should allow J. Stewart to buy a few extra bow ties, if nothing else.

This is a very good point.

At my old shop the managing editor set up a schedule for when people could take them so there was at least enough bodies to get a paper out each day. I don't know if that was legal or not.
