    Damn, you mean my 3 percent raise that got dropped to 1.5 percent is now down to nothing?

    This is so obvious it's really not even worth pointing out. But if they hacked just one worthless executive making, say, $300K, that could save the jobs of 10 hard-working peons making $30K.
    That, of course, is absolutely guaranteed to never happen. Keep up the good work, MG. Maybe someday your stock will crack the coveted $3 mark once again.

    How about getting rid of an execs making a million or more. You wouldn't even miss the stupid oaf and think about how many jobs that could save.

    Marshall Morton made $2.7 million last year. Or maybe it was the year before. Whatever. And what, exactly, does that asshat do? Besides making bullshit videos justifying the company's bullshit decisions, that is.

    You got it all wrong, man. Cut the peons to add a new layer of management! Hence our new regional veeps, or whatever their title is.

    Come on, guys. Someone has to put the corporate jet to use!

    I think we should use the jet, Drew. You and Tom can join Damien, Jason and I at the Final Four this weekend. I'm sure that's covered in the travel budget. ::)

    Marshall Morton gets paid $2.7 million per year to screw up a company. I think we should all seek to become suits.

    I know executive at all the newspaper chains have really screwed things up, but the suits at MG seem to have the least idea of what they are trying to do of any of them. It seems like the overall philosophy of the company changes from week to week.

    I just had an awesome idea. I'm gonna drink another beer because of MG. Who's in?

    If I drank because of MG, I'd have a liver the size and shape of a moldy prune

    Not that I'm trying to praise anyone up top, especially given the fact that my colleagues and I are twisting in the wind for two weeks wondering if we have jobs and if so, what those jobs are and where they're located, but I think some of that MG corporate schizophrenia is a result of the company trying to walk the line between maintaining the bottom line and trying to treat its employees like something slightly better than complete shit. And to an extent, I appreciate it.

    All I'm trying to say is that by comparison to other places I've worked, the MG paper has been far from the worst.

    As a sports reporter in Danville I make a mediocre wage and have to share a company laptop. As a sports editor of a suburban JRC daily paper in a top-10 media market I was paid even less, had a part time ASE and one of the managing editor's duties was to stock the soda machine.

    You want to cut my salary? Great. At least MG did it with furloughs so I could spend extra time with my fiance, rather than straight pay cuts that would have kept me slaving away.

    You want me to reapply and interview for my job, even after two years of distinguished service? Great. At least I'm given what appears to be a chance to save my job by interviewing with folks from the editorial side. And I'm told that those who keep their current jobs will remain at the same salary. JRC pulled a similar stunt at one of its papers years ago, but conducted the interviews with corporate suits instead of editors and fired shit tons of competent people. Those who remained had their salaries slashed.

    <sigh>

    I can't believe I'm trying to justify the way my colleagues and I are being treated. It's like saying the state correctional facility is nicer than a concentration camp.

    What a business.
