Most overrated actor ever

Sorry, but Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore were hilarious. Air Heads, The Wedding Singer and Big Daddy were fairly amusing and Anger Management was pretty good (though Nicholson carried that movie). He's had some stinkers, no doubt (Little Nicky, anyone?), but he's made some pretty good movies as well.

But is his acting ability overrated, or is he just someone whose movies you don't like? Until Spanglish and Punch Drunk Love, I never heard anyone speak of him highly as an actor, just that he made funny movies (for the record, I haven't seen Spanglish or Punch Drunk Love, so I have no idea about his acting chops outside of the comedy realm of Happy Gilmore and such).

Hey, I can laugh at a guy getting his ass kicked by Bob Barker, but I don't have to like myself for it.

His movies are lowest-common-denominator funny in spite of Sandler. I do think he tends toward being sweet rather than raunchy so he does appeal to 10-year-olds in addition to the 13-year-olds in all of us.

"50 first dates" was quite amusing, too. geez, who asks sandler to be a great actor? his films strike a chord because he's appealing in an everyman kind of way. every successful film star need not be sir lawrence olivier. lighten up, folks.

Excellent point. I kept saying to myself, 'am I supposed to be rooting for this guy?!?!'

I too, liked Costner as Crash Davis, hated him as Billy Chapel. And I don't like Field of Dreams, period, so his performance was immaterial to me.

Simple. The whole movie hinges on us believing that it's Shoeless Joe.

    SHOELESS JOE BATTED LEFT-HANDED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm sorry, Liotta and the filmmakers not caring enough to be bothered to be historically accurate ruined the flick for me. And, no, I won't argue it.

In Eight Men Out, guess what? Shoeless Joe bats left-handed.

Hey, I feel guilty enough for not playing catch often with my dad when I was a kid. I don't need Kevin Freakin' Costner rubbing my nose in it.

At what point did the historical inaccuracy bother you? Was it before or after an Iowa farmer heard a voice, saw a vision, and plowed over more than half his crop to build a baseball diamond?

I mean, you're talking about a movie that brought the ghosts of dead baseball players to a farm in Iowa and you're worried about whether Shoeless Joe batted from the proper side of the plate?

OK, I admit, it irked me, but no so much it ruined the enjoyment of the movie for me.

shoeless joe not batting or throwing the right way sucked. but to not be able to get over that to enjoy this CLASSIC says more about the naysayers lack of soul/heart than anything else. how shoeless joe batted had NOTHING to do with this film. geez.   ??? ??? ???

    p.s. -- still laughing over your post, bigpern. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

it's like not liking "pride of the yankees" or "fear strikes out" because the stars couldn't play worth a damn. i'm not defending those flicks, necessarily, but the stories aren't about the way they played baseball. it's about their personal stories.
