Most overrated baseball player of all time

Fourteen pages and no Robin Ventura joke? Geez!

Ryan was my idol growing up, but he's overrated because, just like the home run is the most mythical thing a hitter does, the strikeout is the most awe-inspiring thing a pitcher does. He's the king of that, and the main reason I wanted to pitch like him. That and his longevity thing made him a god in my mind.

The lack of control (and resulting higher ERA) are the only reason for him being overrated. And he's only a bit overrated at that. Heck, half of the posts on this thread compare him to Maddux, which to my mind would be like calling Hank Aaron the most overrated player EVER "because Babe Ruth was better."

And no, I don't think Maddux should be compared to Ruth. All I'm saying is that Ryan's far from the most overrated baseball player of all time.

The most overrated baseball player of all time:

No power, no speed, played four defensive positions (all badly).

Captured the all-time beancounting record primarily because his managers, for some bizarre reasons known only to them, decided to keep putting him in the lineup about five years after he fell below replacement-level.

But if you ask 50 Joe Schmoes who was the "greatest hitter" in baseball history, probably 30 will say "Pete Rose." ::)

But great stats for a shortstop, and for one who may not truly have deserved all his Gold Gloves but was still steady and rangy as a fielder. Position does matter. And as others have mentioned, why the hell are we penalizing longevity? And I don't mean Vic Davalillo hanging around as a pinch-hitter for 20 years. I mean someone who played a very draining position and went forever before missing a game.

No. 1 in consecutive games = automatic Hall of Fame slot. End of story.

And Everett Scott says, "Damn. I should've clubbed Gehrig in the knee before he got to 1,307. Then I'd be in Cooperstown."

    ;D

Was there even a Hall of Fame when Everett Scott's streak was still alive?

And outing alert: buckweaver is really Jeff Gilooly/Stone

No. But there wasn't a Hall of Fame for most of Gehrig's career, either. (There wasn't a museum anyway, until a month and 10 days after Gehrig's streak anyway.)

    Nice, Junkie.

Robbed the words from my lips... I also had Larry Allen and Kevin Gogan on there, too.

    Ripken.....

The other way makes him sound like the NY murderer who was invoked in Seinfeld.
