Most overrated baseball player of all time

    Ryan was a man's man.

And, as much as I think that Clemens has put together the greatest book of pitching stats of all time, I agree with BYH on that.

    Nolan Ryan. Agreed.
But I'd also toss in a vote for Harmon Killebrew.

    God I hate Pete Rose.

    Take a bow, Starman.

So I guess A.C. Green is going into the Basketball Hall of Fame? Ripken is overrated not because he was a bad player, but because once he passed Gehrig, people got the (very wrong) impression that he was as good a player as Gehrig.

My "overrated" votes would go to Pete Rose, Cal Ripken, Nolan Ryan and Brooks Robinson. All great players who were simply overhyped in the media.

Also, I don't see how anyone can mention Killebrew among the overrated. He was very under-publicized during his career playing in Minnesota and I don't recall anyone thinking of him as more than a home run hitter during his playing days. But he was one of the best home run hitters of all time without question. Without looking it up, I think his hr/ab ratio is among the top 2-3 of all time. (He's also the face of Major League Baseball, which appropriated his image for its logo.)

Pete Rose got more hits than anyone in the history of the game.
That's kind of a big deal. Also, won World Series titles in 75, 76, 80; played in World Series in 70, 72 and 83. Also kind of a big deal. Made 18 all-star games.
Killebrew is in the Hall of Fame with a .256 career BA. Just not a guy I would consider truly great.

Rose and Tony Perez, since he's a HOFer, he's over  rated. Is there a lesser deserving HOFerin the last 25 years (Puckett?)

  9. Spot on, Starman.
I just got to this thread, and immediately thought "Rose."
It's a shame his name didn't come up sooner.

Number of rings for Mr. Jeter, please?

Didn't think you'd want to answer that.

Derek Jeter is overrated... Nolan Ryan is way overrated...

Both are great players. One is a Hall of Famer, the other deserves to be there eventually...

Jeter has benefited from his surroundings. It's not his fault he played on a great team, but he is not one of the best players in baseball right now. He's just not...

Ryan is tremendous, but he's overrated because of the strikeout and no-hitter thing... Most people think Ryan is one of the best 10 pitchers of all-time and truthfully, he's nowhere close to guys like Seaver, Carlton and Clemens.

No one ever mentioned it because it wasn't a popular stat during his day but, interestingly, he had nine Top 10 finishes in on-base percentage, according to baseball-reference.com.
