Most overrated baseball player of all time

I'm not sure you can over-rate a guy who won more than 300 games, has more than 5700 strikeouts, pitched seven no-hitters, and averaged 231 innings a season over 27 years. Plus, practically one-third of his starts were complete games.
You might argue he wasn't the greatest pitcher of all-time, but over-rated???

Overrated does not mean you suck...

Ryan was on the all-century team, which was an absolute joke... He's a great player. He's not one of the top 10 pitchers of all-time...

This discussion is bogus to the max. If, as even their detractors admit, the "overrated" players are legitimate Hall of Famers, who can they be overrated? You can't be rated any higher than the Hall of Fame.
Cal Ripken set the consecutive games played streak as a shortstop. Hard to overrate that accomplishment.
Nolan Ryan's credentials as one of baseball's best pitchers were continually questioned during the prime of his career in the '70s. He wasn't overrated then. He overwhelmed his critics with longevity. Longevity matters. Being an effective major leaguer in one's 40s is a notetworthy accomplishment.
People who say Derek Jeter is overrated are really saying "I hate the Yankees."
People who say Pete Rose was overrated did not watch him play, at least not enough.

Nolan Ryan is a bonafide Hall of Famer. Overrated? He played mainly for bad teams when he was a starter (his one WS ring with the Mets he was a reliever). Only thing he didn't win was a Cy Young Award. Take away his no-hitters and the strikeouts and yes, you likely have a sub-.500 pitcher. But Ryan not only threw no hitters late in his career, but he still holds the single-season strikeout record and did it the year the AL first employed the DH so he had better competition to face. Ryan is a Hall of Famer. A first-ballot HOF. Deal with it.

And, for the REAL reason this thread exists, Joe Charbonau, of course. Todd Van Poppel is a close second. Gregg Jefferies is in the discussion.

Putting aside the non-sequiter issue: You don't think Ripken belongs in the Hall? Of course, nowadays it's hard to say someone doesn't belong in the Hall when Eckersley's in it, but putting that aside, too...

And rt, this is what's the thread's about:

Bogus to the max? The discussion doesn't suggest any of the players aren't great or that any of their accomplishments aren't great. The term "overrated" can be applied to anyone who received more hype/publicity than warranted by his accomplishments. Obviously, it's a subjective conversation.

For example, I think Derek Jeter is one of the greatest baseball players of all time. At the same time, I think he's overrated due to the sheer size and volume of the New York media. It's not Derek's fault but nobody is as good as the New York media has portrayed him. The same thing goes for Ripken and Brroks Robinson and Nolan Ryan.

Pete Rose? Well, I probably saw "Charlie Hustle" play as much as almost anyone on this board and I think he was way overrated, mostly because he played the media and did all of those false hustle things like sprinting to first base after a walk. With Pete, it was always about Pete. He was a singles hitter who fooled a lot of people wih his "look at me" hustle.

Since when do rings make a player great? Winning a World Series is a team accomplishment. By this criteria Phil Rizzuto is better than Ernie Banks. Please, people. Leave out "rings" when it comes to individual comparisons/performances.

Damn, there's so many, but I can't think of anyone more overrated than Derek Jeter.

    Barry Bonds? Yeah.

Nolan Ryan? Ridiculous. I know you're going to look at his W-L record and number of walsk, but look at what he did despite the shitty teams he was on for so long. He would have won 350 games had he been on the right teams.

And the most overrated manager in any sport of all-time:

    Tom Lasorda.

The four rings were bought and paid for, and shouldn't even be a consideration. It's easy to rack up four rings with an All-Star team surrounding you.

The .315 career is good, but the way Jeter is treated, he should be a career .380 hitter. And he isn't even the best shortstop on his own team.

Nobody said he wasn't good. Hell, nobody said he wasn't great. Just vastly, vastly overrated.

Roger Clemens couldn't carry Nolan Ryan's jockstrap.

Roger Clemens, and even though I like the guy, Greg Maddux as well, both benefit from shall we say, wide strike zones by modern umpires.

When Clemens didn't have a stud team behind him, he allowed 5 runs a game and absolutely sucked. A little injection here and there and he's become dominant again.

Nolan Ryan threw fucking fast pitches for 27 years.

I'd be willing to bet if you asked most major leaguers who've faced them, they would say Ryan was the most feared pitcher ever.

    Maddux, Glavine? Shit.
