    I was wondering when we'd get to him.

    He has numerous batting titles. He has championship rings. He has numerous All-Star game appearances.

    His lifetime average is one of the highest ever.

    Yes, he's overrated. ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

    I'd rather have Joe Crede.

    to play a favorite game of the board, where did i say that?

    ripken is a hall of famer. no doubt. but it's not because he played in more consecutive games than anyone else, it's what he did in those games

    Tinker and Evers couldn't tie the shoelaces of Trammell, Whitaker and Darrell Evans, and those guys will never get into the HOF without a ticket. But nobody wrote a poem about them.

    I wrote one, "Golden Boy to Sweet Lou to Ugly". But it didn't rhyme, it suffered from my ill-fated attempt to convert it to a rap/breakdancing anthem, and it was marred by Kirk Gibson's non-sensical, "Rarrrr!" at the end.

    Shame really.

    I can say Pete Rose is overrated in this sense... he was voted onto the team of the century in 1999 and he was certainly overrated for that. There was no way he was one of the 30 best baseball players ever, which was the criteria for the team. There's no way he belongs in the top 50 of offensive players. There were a lot of years he was among the top 25 players in the National League, which is obvious because he was selected to the All-Star team so many times. However, I don't know that there were many years you could make an argument that he was in the top 10. During most of Johnny Bench's career, Bench was a more important factor than Pete Rose because of his defense and the fact that Bench gave more offensively for his position than Pete Rose did whereever he played. There is no way Pete Rose was as good as Rickey Henderson.

    As for Harmon Killebrew, the .256 average was a factor of playing in the 1960s when averages were low because of the larger strike zone. If you were to ask American League pitchers to list the batter they would fear the most if they didn't have an open base, Killebrew would have been in the top 10 for most of his career. He never played in a big market so people didn't appreciate his skills, but 573 home runs were no fluke.

    Barry Larkin and Derek Jeter. They are essentially the same guy. Low power, decent but not batting-title averages, good runs scored, but ARod, Miggie Tejada and Nomar blow them out of the water when it comes to overall play.
