I had to look it up because I was confused which way the trades went, but Van Slyke came up through the Cardinals organization and was traded to the Pirates in 1987 for Tony Peña, who was a non-factor in the Cards' NL pennant that year because of injury and basically thereafter.

Van Slyke, on the other hand, became hugely popular in Yinzerland.

I remember hearing, just a couple of times, a radio commercial here in Central Texas for Bluto's Pizza, and it featured Fritz Von Erich. And for some reason, the tag line was, "I'd rather have Bluto's than a blue nose." I have no idea the context of the commercial other than that.

I still am blown away by Ice-T pimping Car Shield.

Ice-T and Shaq, more the latter, are kind of random. Shaq doesn't have to do anything for another day in his life and he is selling all this down market stuff.

Jennifer Garner, Taylor Swift, and Paul Giamatti are also on the list of stars I would think couldn't be bothered to leave the house for filming ads.

    The money must be amazing.

I would think Taylor Swift's Capital One commercials are part of a sponsorship deal for her tour. But she is also getting a reported $8 million for those commercials, and it looks like Garner is getting between $3 million and $5 million per year. So yes, the money is very amazing.

Somebody wanted to know why James Earl Jones continues to do voice-overs for just about any product you could imagine. His answer: Because they asked me.

Seeing Giamatti have to play "Einstein" in those Verizon ads and be told what he should be doing by Cecily Strong depressed me.

There was a PSA featuring Nic Cage for being a good father that would run during MAC football and basketball radio broadcasts that knocked me over when I first heard it.

I was living in Chicago in the mid-nineties and there was some shitty PSA by Scottie Pippen about some issue. It looked like it was filmed by the local high school AV club and Scottie showed the commensurate level of effort. I was certain it was part of a plea deal .
