    Sirs, Madames,

Re Soviets in '80. One factor contributing to the notion that the games was not played on the level by the Soviets ... the fact that they tanked games previously. In one world tournament game (after having already clinched a gold) they played to a scoreless draw with the Czechs and according to eyewitness accounts passed the puck back on a clean breakaway. The scoreless draw was a pro-socialist favour which gave the Czechs a tainted silver.

Look, I'm glad the US won a gold and all, but the Soviets were a Stanley Cup championship level team and the US were collegians. Worlds apart. Betting on the US in that game would be like betting against gravity.

Another country heard from: Italy in 1982. They only made it out of the opening round of the World Cup because ref and linesmen missed a clear goal that would have eliminated the Azzuri ... ball landed behind Dino Zoff and the line but backspun out of the goal in a flash.

Might as well tempt the wrath of two nations.

    YHS ,etc

It was definitely the second round (Pittsburgh beat Jersey in the first round, Islanders beat the Capitals). While 1993 was the year of the playoff upset, the Penguins did at least win a series (Vancouver was the only other home-ice team to win in the first round).

As for whether it was Volek's visor that started the avalanche, I was wrong. Stevens was battling with Richard Pilon. But I'm still 98% positive that it was Pilon's visor that knocked him out, and the face-first plunge that broke his face.

You're probably thinking Volek because he scored the winning goal in Game 7. It's been way too long since I saw that whole thing to remember what hit what, though.

Found the video of the incident. They collide in open ice and Stevens is knocked cold on his feet, and then hits the ice. Still gives me chills.

This discussion should start and end with the Soviets at Munich in 1972. It should also end there.

And the topic of the Soviets at Munich in 1972 should be 99.99999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999% of the posts on this thread.

Those of you who are whining about this blown call in a Super Bowl or that blown call by some overweight baseball umpire ... STFU. Seriously. Go back and watch (not just read about, but really watch) how the USA-USSR men's basketball gold medal game ended, then try to convince me that the call you're carrying a deep personal grudge over even compares to what happened on a basketball court in Munich.

Tell me how the Patriots did in the playoffs the year following their first Super Bowl title, then get back to me. Thanks.

That truly was the screw job to end all screw jobs.

Because it was clearly a deliberate one, not inadvertent or due to incompetence.

Went 9-7 and eliminated by tiebreaker on the final day of the season. The Steelers are finished by the first weekend of November. Not sure I see the parallel ?
