Most undeserving team to win a national title, college or pro...

As I said... the only impact defensive player was Deion Sanders.

Jackson, Dent and Mann were all sliding down the the hill at that point.

And you are certifiably out of your gourd saying the defense was "the dominant side" of the team. The defense was decent... and only that good because of the addition of Prime Time.

I know you are a bitter Cowgirls fan, but you need an engine under the hood to drive a car.

    Your posts are ridiculous.

    No. 51,

My case against Guy Lewis: Drexler picking up four fouls in the first half.

In the tournament NC State did manage to beat Pepperdine ... in two overtimes. And blew out Virginia ... by a point in regional final. Houston routed the 'Ville (nation's second-ranked) in the Final Four.

How can you say that? He's got solid rumors an innuendo to back his point up! hehe

That was a crazy playoff year. I think that all four semi-finalists that year finished third in their divisions.

In fact, and I'm only going from memory, but of the eight teams with home-ice advantage in the first round, I think that the Penguins were the only team to win.

If only Stevens doesn't knock himself cold on David Volek's visor and break every bone in his face when falling to the ice. What I want to know is why it was Volek chasing Stevens into the corner and not a defenseman.

1990 Colorado. The Missouri debacle makes one forget that the Buffs had a controversial victory against Stanford earlier that year.

I'll pass on 1984 BYU for two reasons:

    1. Remember, BYU finished the regular season No. 1. A LOT of highly-ranked at-large teams were invited to the Holiday Bowl -- Washington, first and foremost -- for a chance to take down the Cougars. All passed for bigger paydays. A UW team that valued the Orange Bowl dollars over a better shot at its first national championship deserved what it got -- or, in this case, what it didn't get.

    2. The team that did the most complaining, Oklahoma, completely wet the bed in the Orange Bowl against a Washington team that couldn't win its own conference. The Sooners finished with two losses and a tie.

You go down the final rankings that year and tell me who is most deserving of the title. Two-loss Nebraska and Boston College? One-loss, one-tie, on-probation Florida? I thought UW was the best team, but when you decline a golden opportunity to prove it, you have no right to complain about getting shafted.

BYU was the best choice for No. 1.

FWIW, picked off an NC State site,

    — There were 17 Associated Press College Basketball polls in the 1982-83 season…in which 7 different teams held the #1 ranking for some amount of time. During the season, NC State won SIX games against a team that had been ranked #1 in the country at some point of the season.

    — State played a total of 10 games against five different teams ranked #1 for 13 of the 17 weeks of the season.

    — Had the RPI been in existence in 1983, Houston, UNC-CH, Virginia, & UNLV would have all finished the season in the Top 10. There is a good chance that they all would have finished with Louisville in the Top Five. NC State won 6 games against the hypothetical RPI Top 10 in 1983, and would have been 6-3 overall.

Basically, that State team was pretty damn stout. And that UVA team wasn't exactly chopped liver.

And if you go back and look at that game, IIRC, Houston had that game all but won in the 2nd half and never could put State away. It's not like the Wolfpack ran out to a bullshit lead because of Drexler's fouls and Houston never could recover.

And I'd vote Clemson in 1981, except I don't recognize that as a championship.

I'll agree with 1996 Florida. I know one-loss teams have made the title game before, but how does a team get a rematch in the national title game? That was fucking bullshit.

Also, if there is another team who has won a national title after losing that late in the season, I'd be stunned.

BYU may be the worst team to ever win a national title, but that's not their fault. That was another freaky year where someone had to win it.

    Almost happened in 1998.

If Florida had beaten a Marcus Outzen-led FSU team, the Gators would have had a rematch with Tennessee for the national title.

And Ohio State still would have been bitching that it deserved a shot.

And if only Dale Hunter didn't mug Pierre Turgeron, the Isles would have beaten Les Habs.

Dale Hunter belongs in the same circle of hell as Marty McSorely, Ulf Samulesson and Tod Bertuzzi.

    Col Mustard,

Please tell me that Pepperdine wasn't a top 10 team as well.

The Pack were a nice team, okay. I don't think they fit the profile of a national champion. That's all. Houston might have but their coach fell asleep in the title game. The 'Ville would have been my choice, even the Johnnies (I think I've got the year right). Alas.

You sound like a Bruins fan. I'm amazed by how much Bruins fans still hate Samuelsson for the knee to Cam Neely's thigh. Not exactly a clean play, but not on a level with the Bertuzzi's of the world.
