That's great to know about. But, oddly, I live in one of the 20 biggest metro areas in the country, and there are no advance screenings here.

Also, saw American Gangster over the weekend. A little long/slow in the early going, but otherwise a very good movie.

Along with "Jackass", that's a movie with a couple of scenes in it guaranteed to make anyone gag.
Went and saw "I'm Not There" this weekend...the Bob Dylan movie with six different actors and actresses playing the man. It's pretty good. The acting is good in it. Cate Blanchett nails the "Don't Look Back" era Dylan. It's very artsy (for instance, even though the movie is about Dylan, his name is never mentioned in the movie). It helps a lot to be a fan of Dylan and know a bit of his biography, obviously.

the nanny diaries ... good movie. scarlett is precious. alicia keys doesnt have a big role but plays the part nicely. laura linney plays the tortured, lonely wife of an asshole rich husband (giamatti) treemdously. the kid has a future in the biz too. 3.5 stars out of 5. more than a few times, scarlett looks just like a girl shelly i used to work with; was in love with her but never seized the moment. oh well.

'The Namesake' is out on DVD now. I really liked that movie.
I also recently got around to seeing 'The Lives of Others,' which was very good.
And some 40 years after it was released in the U.S., I recently got a chance to see a screening of 'The Battle of Algiers.'

the lives of others is tremendous. other than "bullet proof" and "breaking and entering," it's the best movie i've seen this year.

how to go out on a date in queens ... i'm 23 minutes into this piece of utter shit. this is the best you can do, jason alexander? i'd walk out but i'd be walking out of my own apartment. minus 25 stars. alexander's mistress in this dreck is the seinfeld woman who spilled bosco on george's red shirt.

in the land of women ... good movie. most of it set in suburban michigan, with some crisp, beautiful visuals. adam brody plays the lead well. meg ryan is gorgeous as ever except she went a bit far on the botox; then again, everyone wants lips like me. she only had a minute at the very end, but the waitress was fantastic. 3.5 stars out of 5.

i know i've been watching movies galore lately, but that's a good thing right now.

    so ...

pittsburgh: this is just great. it's like curb your enthusiasm in movie form with jeff goldblum playing the larry davidesque. ed begley jr. is in it, as is illyana douglas and moby. it's about goldblum going back to his hometown to perform in a local theater version of the music man, partially so that his 23-year-old girlfriend turned fiancee from canada can get a green card; she's also in the music man. anyhoo, this is great stuff. funny ass moment when moby talks about loving amateur porn and douglas (his new girlfriend) looks at goldblum with rolled eyes and says, "OK, food for thought" and sort of wonders quietly who the fuck this moby perv is.

factotum ... based on bukowski short stories. it's ok and strange and good at times. matt dillon is like a looded-up scarlet johansson in ghost world only he does the drunk version. andd costanza would have a heart attack in the scene trashy drunken whore marisa tomei shows her boobies during the sex scene with dillon. 2.75 stars.

Like I said earlier, George would have a field day with "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead." There hasn't ever been that much naked Marisa Tomei outside ... well, maybe Marisa Tomei's house. Damn she has some nice boobies.

Just watched Koyaanisquatsi for the fist time in about 20 years. I feel comfortable saying it's the best movie ever made without a single word of spoken or written dialogue. The imagery is just staggering. I don't do drugs, but I almost wish I did so I could watch this film on drugs.

    Seen it, Xan?

Saw Night at the Museum with Ben Stiller and Robin Williams last night. That movie sucked.
I do not recommend anyone watching that movie.

Although the slapping incident between Larry and Dexter was the highlight of the movie.
