I finally saw Taxi Driver for the first time. It was as incredible as I expected. De Niro completely owned this movie. And I'd watch the film if only for the beautiful Bernard Herrmann score. Very good ending.

Tonight we saw "Mongol" quick before it disappears from theaters. It was one of the Academy Award nominees for best foreign film. Story of Genghis Khan. Certainly the first time I've seen a movie in Mongolian with English subtitles. Much better than that description makes it sound. Saw the first subtitle and groaned because I hate watching subtitled movies, then settled in and really enjoyed the film. Extremely violent. Laugh all you want at this recommendation, but it's worth the ticket price.

brokeback mountain ... not bad. imaginative story rooted in reality of the human condition. deep moments. vivid cinematography.

beyond it, makes you wonder about ledger. did playing a hetero/gay cowboy fuck with him the last few years? push him into the drugs that killed him? now that i've seen this, i'm intrigued about the post-brokeback effect.

American Psycho ... Cool stuff. I've become a big Christian Bale fan the last 3-4 months. I had no idea who he was before 3:10 to Yuma, and then I started renting movies with him. He's quality, and he's fantastic in this movie. 4.5 stars out of 5.

I'd write more, but I have to go pick up my new business cards ...

Just finished watching "Cleaner." Stars Samuel L. Jackson, Ed Harris and Eva Mendes. It flew under the radar and never saw a wide theatrical release, which is a shame. Worth a rental or adding to your Netflix list.

Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson - If by chance you have a choice to see this or the Batman movie, see this.

I think that kind of pseudo psychology is kind of silly, Xan. Ledger died of an overdose from perscription medicine. He was taking it because he couldn't sleep, which started when his marriage fell apart. I think he put a lot into the role of Enis Del Mar, but to suggest that he was tortured by pretending to be in love with another man is silly. He's pretty much cited his time filming Brokeback as the happiest of his life, seeing as he and Williams met and had a kid during the filming of the movie.

Not saying he was tortured by pretending he was in love with another man. I was thinking out loud when I wrote the original post. What I'm saying, or think I was trying to say, is that perhaps him playing that kind of role created some kind of backlash with his truest Aussie friends. My take is that Australia is a man's-man country, very much anti-gay -- and I have no idea if that's the case.

I'll try to put it another way. A poster here pretends to be gay and all sorts of malarkey ensues from posters making lewd and crude gay posts. After a while the poster doesn't want to be thought of, or perceived as, gay and wants the hard joking to end. But the perception is out there and the poster won't escape it untiil he nukes his handle.

In real life, you can't nuke your handle.

It's probably as far-fetched a notion as there is with this movie. But I got caught up in the moment with Ledger playing Del Mar and then being dead 3 years later. The thing is, we'll never really know all the nitty-gritty details of the last 3 years. They could be innocent details with nothing to do with Brokeback, or, perhaps he was shamed by many Aussie "real men" (read: anti-gay) who never would let him live down his role as a cowboy who screwed a cowboy and fell in love with him. And I'm not saying I believe that. That's just one of the connections I thought of after the movie.

the tracey fragments ... the only stranger movie i've ever seen is "the science of sleep." this one is trippy in a canadian sort of way. ellen page is good in a role totally opposite of juno and even hard candy. people with ADD might love the mash-up cinematography. bizarre. one song early on is kickass. i think it might be "horses" by elizabeth powell, brendan canning and charles spearin. if you want a funky ride, check it out. 3.7 stars out of 5.

milwaukee, minnesota: it's raw and good. troy garity is like a young hoffman in rainman, only a different affliction. i'd never heard of alison folland, but she's solid, too.
