d_b'ing myself from the 'latest movie thread' ... but damn I liked this movie and wanted to share once again, about 30 seconds after I posted.

    ****

last night stopped and rented the hammer with adam corolla -- [really] surprised that I liked it as much as I did. I was prepared for the worst, but I completely enjoyed the whole thing and laughed out loud quite a few times. the final 20 minutes or so lagged a bit, but otherwise was really well done. not a typical quick-hit comedy ... some actual story to it and I enjoyed that. he didn't force the humor and just let the comedy sell itself.

semi-true story about his life, I guess. who woulda thunk that corolla used to be a gold gloves fighter and a carpenter? (or maybe I'm the only one that didn't know.) great job and one I actually want to own and watch again. would recommend a rental.

loved when he asked the love interest in his boxing class where she got her shiner. a client, she says, took a swing at her. "hey, I think prostitution should be legal." "I'm a public defender."

    others ...

corolla: You guys sure seem to love Nicaragua ... except for the part where you risked your lives not to live there any more.

    corolla: do you have taquitos?
    roach coach lady: taquitos?
corolla: hey, if you said spaghetti I wouldn't be confused. taquitos!

Loved The Hammer. Really engaging little movie with a good spirit. I've always liked Carolla, but even so I was surprised he had that in him. If they hadn't kept pimping it on The Soup, I might not ever have checked it out.

I caught a mention of it in SI or I would have never seen it, either. really glad I did. probably the only movie he'll ever carry or even be any good in, but ozzie may be a nicaraguan comedy star in the making.

. . . just the way I've felt about Gump, forever, from the first five minutes in, forward.

Still feel that the style of the creators meshed far better with this story/concept
than it did within Gump, but there's plenty of room for disagreement/discomfort with this style, and respect contrary opinions, in this instance.

Did anyone see Max Payne? I like Wahlberg and the video game was cool, was wondering if the film is something I should see, there is a movie house here that shows second run films and a buddy that works there said Max Payne was going to be there next week.

My brother is a huge video game fan and he loved it. I love anything with Wahlberg so I'll likely give this a shot some day. The trailers weren't that great for it, though.

They didn't seem to show anything that blew me away. Wahlberg is fun to watch so I may take a look.

My problem with the trailer was that I had no idea what the hell was going on. Admittedly, I'm not a Max Payne fan so maybe I'm outside the target market but I couldn't for the life of me get a grip on what was happening.

It was kind of hard to tell, they made it look like the movie was another in the same vein as The Spirit or Sin City.

I have a pretty standard policy that if I don't like a trailer I am very reluctant to watch a flick and I think that's what did me in with this film.

For other Wahlberg flicks, like the Shooter and Four Brothers, the trailers were so good that I immediately found myself looking for more info online.

Of course, sometimes this fails. Was practically dragged to Transformers after hating the trailer and loved the movie. Loved the trailer for Vantage Point and thought the movie sucked ass.

Good thing for Netflix/Red Box. It allows me to take a flyer on a movie I probably would ignore otherwise.

    Shooter was excellent.

Is Red Box the vending machine looking things that they have in like Safeway and other grocery stores?

Yeah. One dollar gets you a night with a new release. Good way to screen out the duds without forking over $10.50 for a movie ticket and $10 for popcorn/soda.
