Yes, but in elementary schools the teachers are taught to lock and barricade the door while the children get as far away from it as possible - preferably behind something large and heavy or in a supply closet.

And in tornado drills, the entire school goes to one storm shelter, sitting side-by-side against the walls - often two or three deep depending on the size of the shelter.

 

I love how the person who doesn't have kids and never will thinks he can weigh in on any of this and people should give a fuck.

 

If it's like the preschool, it's month to month and we won't have to sign a contract saying she'll go the whole year. Plus, the tuition is about half of what it was for the all-day preschool. The school day is 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

My school is in the middle of San Jose. The heart of Silicon Valley. The number of kids who don't have a computing device that isn't a phone is staggering. The numbers who don't have internet are not zero. We're in Silicon f'ing Valley.

So today we were handing out computers to 130 some odd seventh graders. We have at least that many on Monday for eighth graders. We must have handed out 30 hot spots. It's a problem. The alternative is we expose these kids who can't afford internet or a computer to Covid. And mom and dad. And grandma. And aunty. And baby bro.

We also were among those BTE mentioned who had a large amount of kids who either didn't log into class or did maybe one class. We also didn't take attendance or grade anything. It was triage. We had this shutdown, no training for what do we do if we can't come to school and we did our best. We called kids and parents. Hounded them and have bullshit reasons to do the work. Our smartest kids basically told us to F off because there were no grades (the others went along because we hounded them). This year, we're giving grades. Attendance will be taken. Kids must show up to zoom lessons. Now we're moving beyond crisis management and actually trying to teach. Fingers crossed. We won't get it right but we're going to try.

And anyone who thinks they can do better is welcome to get a sub application and put their money where their mouth is.

For the past five seasons, Lightner has been coaching football in a Japan professional league. Although he was visiting Lincoln, he had been scheduled to fly back to Japan on July 4, but coronavirus-related travel issues prohibited it.

He spent two seasons as offensive line coach at Vanderbilt (2014-15) after working nine seasons in the same role at Ohio University under former Nebraska coach Frank Solich.
In addition to Lightner's health complications, his situation is made more challenging by the fact that his health coverage in Japan doesn't cover him in the United States.
