One advantage of SARS-CoV-2 being such a well-evolved virus, it turns out, is that scientists had a much easier target.

Can someone articulate the case for banning vaccine passports?

    Because freedom.

Coming from the same patriots who get their knickers in a wad over other sorts of government regulation.

Like Wicked said, this is an extension of the fundamental argument we’ve had all along: Health vs Haircuts. The economy can’t run if we tell people they can’t participate and stay home. But we can’t stop the virus if we don’t tell people to limit their participation in the economy and other aspects of life. So some places want proof you aren’t going to spread the virus. Other places think the damage to the economy isn’t worth the efforts to stop the virus. And people are tired of 14 months of restrictions. They see they didn’t get sick during restrictions so why do we need more? Or what about the right to say no to a new medicine? Missing from this is they were likely asymptomatic so they didn’t know they had it but spread it to others who weren’t as lucky. Secondly, this vaccine was in development for a while because coronaviruses aren’t new.

I disagree with him, but Dad (who is a reasonable type and fully vaccinated) and I were talking a couple weeks ago and he observed that he was uncomfortable with tying the elimination of restrictions to being vaccinated on the grounds that it 'outs' the unvaccinated for making a personal choice they have a right to make. I suppose one has a right to refuse, but I think one should face moral opprobrium for deliberately choosing to be a potential transmission vector for a deadly virus. But there is a 'personal freedom' argument that has a little more depth than the average Marjorie Taylor Greene jeremiad.

In the face of a global pandemic why should anyone who is not at risk because of some kind of medical condition have the right to turn down a vaccination?

It is going to take an outbreak of polio in the United States to show that these antivaxxers are not just ignorant, they are dangerous. And trust me as the anti-vax movement continues to grow people are going to stop getting the polio vaccination for their children. And there is going to be polio in the United States again.

Attended my first get-together where randos were allowed since pre-Covid. I'm vaccinated at all, but I am kind of wondering if my immunities to all the other crap that's out there aren't what they used to be.

When flu season starts I will for damn sure take my mask out of its dresser drawer. Further note. Yesterday I had a colonoscopy. Mt. Auburn hospital, a Harvard teaching hospital, still has very strict covid protocols in place. They put the oxygen connection onto my nose underneath the mask I wore through the whole thing (BTW, the doctor had Guns n' Roses on at high volume from start to finish). This is in high vaccination Massachusetts where my medical records clearly show I've been vaccinated. I wonder if these precautions will just become SOP at many hospitals like forever.
