There has always been a moron quotient in the country. The Macarena. Pet rocks. OctoMom. No shortage of idiocy from just the last few decades alone.

But morons are always outnumbered. It just doesn't feel that way because the shriekers are being amplified every day.

I have to defend pet rocks. Yes, they were a stupid fad, but the reason that they caught on in the first place was that you bought a box with a rock in in that came with a little pamphlet on how to train it. It was the pamphlet and how it was written that was the fun of the thing. For instance, "to teach your pet rock to roll over, place it on a hill and give it a little nudge to get it started". It didn't hurt that it got on Johnny Carson six weeks before Christmas. So they sold a bunch of them. It was a "funny once" kind of joke, and no doubt a dumb fad, but it was the joke of the moment and the guy who came up with them caught lightning in a bottle and made a ton of money.

If I had to guess a year ago how many people would be unvaccinated today, I would've said 15 percent — and that was the worst-case scenario, accounting for those who couldn't get it medically and those who were off the metaphorical reservation.

The Mayo Clinic says less than 60 percent of the country is fully vaccinated, and fewer than 70 percent of people have at least one shot.

Even accounting for kids under 12, that's far from where anyone would've predicted.
