Still trying to figure out if those of us old enough to have a smallpox vaccine scar are protected against the pox du jour. Have not found an answer, but did come across this gem of a quote: "... if COVID has taught us anything, it’s how frequently the accepted scientific answer to a seemingly straightforward medical question is, “Who the fuck knows?”"

True. This is more a comment on the complexity of nature than on anything about the doctors.
Modern medicine did develop vaccines, which have been far better than Trumpists are willing to admit even if not providing an immediate and full solution.

    The vaccines are a 6.

And in December 2020 most people thought they were a 9.

I’ve gone from avoiding human contact to rejoining society, plus I haven’t gotten Covid. I’d give it a solid 10.

We need our KDF back. OUR KDF. Not the cousin-dating, booger-eating, bastard child of John Rich and a brain damaged Kid Rock throwaway that shits up the airwaves.

And thank you morning drive at KDF for keeping me happy enough to stay in my car and not break aerials on the cars around me that sported Confederate flags.

I'm two hours away from getting on a flight to the US, heading back for a(nother) funeral. First time I've seen my family in two years. I've been reassured that my family is sufficiently vaccinated, but sources tell me masking is rare in Omaha outside doctor's offices and rarer still outstate. The itinerary also includes 150th anniversary celebrations for the village where I grew up, so I'm preparing myself to once again be the lone weirdo walking around with a mask in the depths of summer. Better the disdain of a few relatives than having to spend two weeks in a government isolation facility with overflowing sewage and no internet.

I got something of an answer to my smallpox vaccine question this morning. The pretty smart daughter of an academic friend tells me that, yes, the fossils with smallpox vaccine scars would have very strong protection against monkeypox ... if we'd gotten one of those boosters, and it's been a long, long time since they were widely and regularly administered.

I can't tell you for sure, but I might have gotten a booster to my smallpox vaccination through school immunizations as a kid. That said, I came out of HS in '74, so it's been long enough that I expect any protection to be minimal at best.

My risk of exposure to monkeypox I would put at something well below minimal.

I got my Smallpox booster in late December 1969, according to my little WHO immunizations booklet that my mom saved. Monkeypox begone!
