The Dept. of Energy manages over a dozen different laboratories in various branches of science, particularly nuclear physics. That is the connection that would lead them to investigate (as much as they are able, I don't think any US intelligence agency has much direct information on China's research facilities) whether the virus leaked from a lab, the better to identify possible problems with their own labs.

I definitely trust a Murdoch outlet to get to the bottom of this, in a totally even-handed, fact-checked manner, of course.

My guess is that they queried everyone in government with the expertise to analyze it.

I'm sure every US agency, including the Fish & Wildlife Service, has at least one and most more employees who're designated "China watchers."

Reminds me of those "17 intelligence agencies" that said Russia was behind the email hacking WRT the 2016 election.

Twelve of which do no investigative intelligence; they only just pass along information if it happens to cross their desk.

So Nate Silver has his fast ball back and is now authoritative on the early spread of Covid?

Apparently it’s in a classified document.

    At any rate, Nate’s right.
