Who Is Most at Risk for Long Covid?

A new analysis of research conducted during the first two years of the pandemic helps crystallize some answers that have been emerging.

It found that patients over 40, those with previous health issues and those who had a severe coronavirus infection had greater risk of developing long Covid. And it affirmed a growing consensus that vaccination lowers that risk.

The analysis, conducted by a team of researchers in Britain and published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, looked at 41 studies published between the beginning of the pandemic and Dec. 5, 2022. The studies, which had all been peer-reviewed, involved a total of 860,783 patients.

(CW: long Twitter thread) Really in-depth thread and article from the AP's Dake Kang on the machinations behind China's sudden shift from "zero Covid". Unsurprisingly, it has generated a swift "nuh-uh, YOU!" from Chinese state media.

I would've thought China's plan for mitigating such problems would be better, and better implemented, than anywhere else.

The suggestion, farther down in the thread, of a sort of intentional elderly genocide is disturbing. As is the thought by, ironically, SJGotUSA that makes the Chinese elderly sound just like, um, MAGA supporters...

Had scheduled a booster for my dad who's had 5 shots already. Falls into immunocompromised and is six months out from the last shot, so I thought get him boosted again.

Clinic calls back and says he's up to date and no new booster is needed. No new booster available anyway, they say.

I got it after 5 shots and it fucked me up, still not 100%, can't imagine what it would do to a 98-year-old. He'd die I'd guess.

    We done with shots?

There really hasn't been any guidance regarding further shots. There was an assumption that they may be an annual thing like a flu shot, but that's never been confirmed. Got my fourth shot last September so I figure I should be good until September '23 at least.

I like Hotez. A lot. But he needs to stick to the virus itself, not trying to frame what happened in the past.

    He's wrong on this.

Statement in support of the scientists, public health professionals, and medical professionals of China combatting COVID-19

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lancet_letter_(COVID-19)

Some very prominent scientists got very defensive, very quickly, very early on (even before the virus was circulating widely in the U.S.) condeming and calling anything a "conspiracy theory" that suggested that the virus might not have a natural origin.
