Aldi is the freaking bomb. Last time I was in one was pre-covid, when I was working 3 doors down from a store. But their beer was less than $6 for a six-pack (at the time) and it was good. Probably still under $10 today. And the rest of their groceries were good, although I too would avoid the meat.

For a once-a-year trip to the area,

    Aldi
    Weis
    Or Giant?

Lidl has a narrow footprint in the U.S. They run up the Atlantic seaboard from Atlanta to Long Island. None west of I-81 nor east of the Hudson.

    Quality grocery store jack.

Aldi and A&P were my go-to for good prices when I lived nearby either. Couldn’t make them “one-stop shopping” but pretty close.

I’ve been a Trader Joe’s fanboi for a long time. Their prices compared to the rest of my sky-high area are certainly welcome. And most of the stuff is very good. Our staples are all TJ’s.

Only bad experience lately was whatever the ginger beer is they sell. It was pretty awful.

In-and-Out… I thought you were smarter than this.

When you think about it, shouldn’t all food service and prep be masked?

I reported someone had stolen the pickle and olive bar to the Publix FB person and they just laughed at me!

Both carry things I can't find without going into Detroit-on-the-Cumberland, oops, Nashville. This is especially true of Aldi when it comes to seasonal food items.

I have Aldi, Publix, a Walmart superstore, and Winn-Dixie five minutes away, and a Dollar General much closer than that. I'd like to do Trader Joe's but it's twenty minutes each way in snooty mall territory. I never got hooked on anything in there, so I don't miss it.

Agree on Publix BOGOs. Buy one, it's half price. Any time I'm in there and see a staple pantry food on BOGO I buy it whether I need it right then or not. No brainer.

There are three Safeways, two Giants, three Aldi’s and a Shoppers all within two miles of me. Of those choices, I go to Safeway the most only because it’s the most convenient and is rarely too crowded. Giant is usually the best, but a giant (pun intended) pain in the ass to get in and out of.

If I’m going to have to fight crowds anyway, I’m driving the extra three miles to Wegmans.

A new mini Wegmans also just opened up right down the street in the third floor of a new apartment building. Haven’t been there yet, but I’d imagine it’s also a mob scene.

Within two miles of me, I have two Krogers, a Fresh Market, a Publix, an Aldi, a Lidl, and Elwood Thompson (boogie local vegan place). I have my choices but the Publix is my regular place just because it's a nicer store, though the produce there is hit or miss. Then again, when I'm slammed and traveling a lot in the summer, I'm not buying a lot of fresh produce anyway.

As a side note, I’m a big fan of The Food That Built America on History Channel. The new season has an episode on the rise of supermarkets. Really good.
