The deadliest day in U.S. history was the 1900 Galveston hurricane, with more than 6,000 dead. I don't know if the worst-case scenario will top that, but it might give it a run for its money.

    1. They kept stores open while when other non-essential stores were closing with the excuse that God “is in control.” The letter came out March 19, long after they and everyone knew that this virus was a danger.

    2. The letter also included their version of ”exciting times!” corporatespeak about “balancing the needs of the company with its employees.” We all know what that means. But hey, Mr. Employee, sorry that we’re cutting you without severance, and we likely exposed you to coronavirus, but hey, God’s in control!

Nonsense. BICYCLE stores are still open --- much to the delight of our many non-housebound sj.com cyclists. Hobby Lobby's direct competitor is still OPEN. Stores stayed open until forced to close by their counties or states (or in the case of my haircut place, by the CDC).

    1. How many people go in Mom & Pop Bicycle Store vs. Hobby Lobby?

    2. Are Mom & Pop Bicycle Store and their direct competitor using their deity as an excuse for its business practices?

    1. Not relevant.
    2. Not remotely relevant.

Although HL's "excuse" for staying open could have been the same as everyone else's: "Because we don't want to lose money."

    Not sure why that matters.

Looks like Trump's boy in Florida is doing a great job. These are cumulative COVID-19 deaths vs. low-end, mean and high-end projections for the state in the University of Washington study released last week. Great work, Trumpists.

Both are perfectly relevant, because those are the reasons Hobby Lobby is getting ripped on. 1 is especially relevant taking social distancing into account.

They stick with “we don’t want to lose money,” most people get that. We know this is a major emergency situation and we know that businesses are only being ordered to close because of that. But when they start claiming their business operations are some sort of religious test, then they’re going to get criticized for how they’re treating their employees.

Likewise, the great state of Mississippi and its perpetually defiant, petulant, virtue-signaling governor, who probably suspects most deaths in his backwards state will be suffered by the undesirables whom heroes fought to exclude from Ole Miss back in the day, is thriving. He has 16 corpses to account for. The worst=case UW scenario had eight at this stage.

This strikes me as really misguided. Can you guarantee that on your way to/from the park that all social distance is maintained? What happens if tons of people see it and decide to go to?

Yes, people should stay the fuck in and not go out unless it is absolutely necessary.

    Fine. You finally said it.

They're not guilty of wanting to stay open.

They're not guilty of treating employees like shit.

(Because that's pretty much the case across the spectrum of American business).

They're guilty of wanting to stay open and treating employees like shit ... . WHILE BEING CHRISTIAN.

That doesn't make me bat an eye. Sure does a lot of people, though.
